Colorado-based singer-songwriter Laura Veirs played a beautiful set of simple lyrics over delicate harmonies in the second half of Friday’s double header Free At Noon performance. Following a set from Dessa, Veirs slowed the pace down showcasing songs off of her latest album Warp and Weft, such as “Sun Song” and “Shapeshifter”. Check out a gallery of photos below, and listen to the set in its entirety here (via the WXPN media player).
Laura Veirs‘ “Sun Song’ was featured as a My Morning Download last month after the singer-songwriter announced details for her upcoming album Warp and Weft. Set for release on August 20th, Warp and Weft features collaborations with Jim James, Neko Case, members of The Decemberists and more. “Sun Song” is a gorgeous wash of summery light, with Veirs’ pristine vocals elevated by a pedal steel guitar, string section and subtle banjo melodies. The accompanying video feels homemade and personal alternating clips of Veirs playing guitar in a backyard and landscape images that foreshadow the impending change of seasons. Laura Veirs will perform at the newly reopened Boot and Saddle venue on Broad St. on September 20th; tickets and information can be found here. Watch the video for “Sun Song” below and learn more about the making of the record here.
Portland singer-songwriter Laura Veirs has a new album, Warp and Weft, coming out August 20 on her own label, Raven Marching Band Records. It’s her 9th studio album, was produced in Portland in March of this year by Veirs’ longtime collaborator Tucker Martine, and features Jim James (My Morning Jacket), KD Lang, Neko Case, Brian Blade and members of The Decemberists. According to her site:
Veirs was eight months pregnant with her second child during the recording; she says her experience as a mother brought about some of the more beautiful and painful songs. “I’m haunted by the idea that something terrible could happen to my kids but that fear pushes me to embrace the moment. This record is an exploration of extremes – deep, dark suffering and intense, compassionate love.”
WXPN Welcomes Laura to the rebooted Boot & Saddle on Friday, September 20. Tickets are available here.
