Local musician Marc Neibauer has released a new track called “Cowards Get What They Deserve.”  The song follows the former Eat Your Birthday frontman’s 2013 LP Don’t Fall Apart, his debut as a solo artist.  ”Cowards Get What They Deserve” is a serene track whose message, according to Neibauer, boils down to karma and “what goes around comes around.”  Along with the lyrics, the focal point of the song is new bandmate Chiemena Ukazim’s guitar playing, which gets a spotlight towards the end and gives the song dimension.  Stream and download the song below.

Listen to a live recording of Marc Neibauer performing “Kathy + Ken” in NYC (playing Johnny Brenda’s on 9/27)

Marc Neibauer

Although he just released an LP called Don’t Fall Apart under his own name last month, Philly’s Marc Neibauer hasn’t completely let go of his Eat Your Birthday Cake roots.  The indie pop musician recently played a show at Brooklyn’s Spike Hill where he dug into the EYBC catalog and pulled out a rendition of “Kathy + Ken,” an ominous-sounding love ballad that appeared on his band’s 2011 record Enemies.  The live version is a little brighter and lighter than the recorded version, with clearer keyboard melodies replacing the fuzzy synths of the original.  Stream the live take below, followed by the original.  Neibauer will headline Johnny Brenda’s on September 27th with Scott Churchman, Other Colors and The Fantastic Imagination; tickets and information can be found here.

Download Don’t Fall Apart, the new LP from Marc Neibauer (formerly Eat Your Birthday Cake)

Marc Neibauer

Marc Neibauer, formerly known as Eat Your Birthday Cake, has just released his new LP, Don’t Fall Apart, today. The album is available to stream below, and download on bandcamp. A DIY effort, the album was recorded and produced locally, mainly by Neibauer himself. It’s a melodic, alternative pop album – the single “Heart of Stone” is a mellow, indie-rock tune with swirling guitars and a hint of psych-pop. Neibauer and his band will be having a record release show on August 10th at the Prism Brewery in North Wales. Check out the full album below (“Amusement” and “Bleach” are also great tracks).

Eat Your Birthday Cake is dead; long live Marc Neibauer! (download a new single, “Playtime”)

Marc Neibauer

Marc Neibauer formerly made music under the guise of the poppy indie project Eat Your Birthday Cake. But over time, it became less of a band you’d see headlining shows, and more of a means for the jazz-schooled musician and teacher to record and release music. Now, Neibauer is recording under his own name, and just released the new single “Playtime.” Not as playful as the name might suggest, the tune is lush and soothing, with melodic guitar work – good stuff. Neibauer is set to release the Don’t Fall Apart EP next month. Meanwhile, get a taste of his new music with the free download below.
