XPoNential Additions: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Red Baraat and Matt Pond join 2013 lineup

This just in from the XPoNential Music Festival programming depot – three artists have been added to the 2013 lineup. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, who entertained a jam-packed Wiggins Park with a lively set in 2010, will make their second XPoFest appearance. Also added are Bhangra fusionists Red Baraat and poppy indie singer-songwriter Matt Pond. Tickets are available here. In their biggest headlining show to date, Jukebox the Ghost played Union Transfer last Friday night. Fellow formal local Matt Pond played an opening set with his new band, and Delaware buzz-makers The Spring Standards opened the show. Check out scenes from the evening in the photo gallery above.

Matt Pond’s eponymous project doesn’t feel 15 years old. With upbeat harmonies and jangly choruses, his new album could be filed next to Les Savy Fav as easily as it could be next to The Lumineers. It is Pond’s tenth full-length and follows the release of his ninth EP, The Natural Lines, which came out earlier this month. The album, The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand, drops February 5th, but Paste is streaming it now. Matt Pond will be coming to Philadelphia with his new album to play with Jukebox the Ghost at Union Transfer on March 15th. Tickets and information for the show are available here. Local rapper Chill Moody teamed up with Freeway for the grooving new track “Change Coming.” The song is included on Moody’s latest RFM album, which he previewed at his sold-out headlining gig at The TLA this past week. International duo BOY is one of 2013′s buzziest bands, and XPN will be welcoming them to World Cafe Live on Wednesday, March 27th. The German/Swiss pair have their debut album Mutual Friends coming out in the states next month but you can get a sneak preview via Noisetrade, who shared a sampler featuring the YouTube hit “Little Numbers.” Stream and download the sampler below; tickets and information for BOY’s Philly show can be found here.

This week’s Key Studio Session featured punk rockers Glocca Morra, a wild bunch that put forth two releases in 2012 on top of touring extensively. 2013 sees the Philly quartet opening for hometown favorites Everyone Everywhere at The Barbary on January 19th; tickets and information can be found here. Indie-pop musician Matt Pond released a free acoustic EP called The Natural Lines this week via Noisetrade. The one-time Philadelphia resident will be releasing The Lives Inside The Lines In Your Hand in just over a month and has a date set opening for Jukebox the Ghost at Union Transfer on March 15th. One of the latest exports from the Motor City are Jamaican Queens, a glam-pop/rock trio with hints of a harder-edged Foster the People. Jamaican Queens have a debut album coming out in March and have kicked-off a tour that brings them through Philadelphia on January 15th for a show at Kung Fu Necktie. With the release of The Lives Inside The Lines In Your Hand still a month and change away, Matt Pond today released The Natural Lines, a free EP via the folks at Noisetrade. In plaintive, stripped-down recordings – mostly just clean electric guitar and Pond’s voice – we get a taste of some of the songs that will appear in a much more dressed up style when the full-length releases next month. Looking a little further down the road, he is touring with Jukebox the Ghost, and plays Union Transfer on March 15. Singer/songwriter Matt Pond will joining Jukebox the Ghost on a two month long tour spanning into March of 2013. Though he will not be returning to Philadelphia until March 15th, Matt, as well as Jukebox the Ghost, will be playing a string of shows including the legendary Crocodile in Seattle and the historic Metro in Chicago. The tour will kick off on December 7th in St. Augustine, Florida where Matt will be playing acoustic sets before resuming in February of 2013 with a full band. Onetime Philadelphian, longtime New Yorker Matt Pond will release his latest LP, The Lives Inside the Lines In Your Hand, in February. It’s the ninth record for the prolific songwriter, the first for BMG Records, and the first released simply under his name – rather than Matt Pond PA, which is what he called his band when it was based in Philly from the late 90s into the mid-aughts. With this new chapter approaching for Pond, we’re pleased to report that his songwriting is polished as ever – on the new single “Love to Get Used,” it’s dressed up in impressive pop tones and a snappy beat, while Pond’s singing retains its signature warmth and earnestness. Lyrically, he’s bold and excited for the uncertainty of the future: “Let’s hang on to abandon / Let’s hope we lose control / To be out in the open baby / And let go of the ropes.” Listen to the song below; The Lives Inside the Lines In Your Hand is out February 5.
