Metric delivered an arena-caliber performance at The Fillmore

The arena-caliber kaleidoscopic lights-and-color show to which Metric treated a crowded room yesterday evening seemed an apt testament to how much of a rockstar Emily Haines has become over the years. Or, maybe she’s always been a rockstar. Maybe what’s really evolved is that she and her band are simply finally getting their due, along with more mainstream radio play, of regularly headlining larger venues like Fillmore Philly, on stages with some breathing room and all the production value to match.

Canadian alt-pop jauggernaut Metric released its sixth LP, Pagans in Vegas, last fall, and its headline tour in support of it brings it to The Fillmore Philadelphia on March 15th. The album serves as yet another example of a group who is dead set on constantly evolving their already-impressive sound. Not satisfied with simply resting on their laurels — though at this point they surely could — Metric is gaining new fans by the day while staying true to want has worked so well in the past. Metric brought epic energy to the Tower Theater (photos, review, setlist)

The indie bros were screaming her name even before she walked out onstage. “Emily!” they yelled into the high ceilings of the Tower Theater. “I love you!”

Metric front woman Emily Haines has a bold and seductive stage presence that can woo an audience of any age. In front of me, an elementary schooler sat on the hip of his father. To my left, an older grey-haired man rocked out with his 40-something girlfriend. And me? I’m a 25-year-old who started listening to Metric in high school. The band’s sound sure has changed since I last saw it play the Starlight Ballroom in 2006 – but Emily Haines’ persona has not. Continue reading →
