Dante Bucci kicked off WXPN’s lunchtime busker series on Wednesday and The Key revisited the local musician’s 2008 effort Reminiscence in advance of his set at The Porch at 30th Street Station. Bucci will perform at the Tin Angel on May 1st; tickets and information can be found here. Stream the EP below or download it at Bandcamp.

Recorded in November 2012, Folkadelphia premiered its session with Jason Anderson this week. The singer-songwriter performed a handful of new songs, including “Cold Rain,” which you can stream and download below. Check out the full session on Folkadelphia’s Bandcamp page.

Local Philly emo band Pocket released their debut self-titled EP last weekend, blending the old-school sound of 90s emo bands with a punched-up modern style kick. Stream and download “Pool Party” below and get the four-track EP here.

The Key Studio Sessions: Modern Inventors

Modern Inventors impressed a broad cross-section of the Philly music scene last year. They naturally had the pedigree to win over the singer-songwriter crowd – singer-guitarist Matt Kass’ old band The Brakes was a known name, after all. But their soulful harmonies drew in listeners from the pop realm, and their skill as players and songwriters attracted indie rock ears. Not too long after a sold-out show at Johnny Brenda’s celebrating the release of Trains and Aeroplanes in December, the band found itself in our studio performing a set of mostly unreleased new songs. The excellent, rambling rhythms of “Goodbye, Northbrook Drive” were the only familiar sounds we heard – they instead took the opportunity to lay down some new cuts that show their sound reaching even broader. “Old Habits,” filmed by the folks at Out of Town Films, is a mellow smash of 70s proportions. “This Sign” is a snappy, country-fied Wilco-style number, while “The Deep End” has a sytlish and expressive Jeff Buckley thing going on. And set-closer “Selfish Generation” would play well on present day pop radio. Download and listen to it all below, and keep an ear out for more from the Inventors this spring.

We’re very excited for this week’s Key Studio Session with Modern Inventors, the Philly pop-rock five-piece whose debut LP Trains and Aeroplanes wowed an impressive cross-section of Philly music fans last winter. It’s not just the songs they played – even though a generous helping of promising new material shows their band’s range stretching even further – but also the visuals. This session was conducted in collaboration with our friends at Out of Town Films, who decked the studio out in Christmas lights and captured the warmth of the Inventors’ new tune “Old Habits.” Check out the video below, listen to the session in its entirety on WXPN tonight (88.5 FM in Philly, XPN.org anywhere else) and check back here tomorrow morning to download it.

Interview: Matt Kass of Modern Inventors on building Trains and Aeroplanes

They may be sneaking their debut full-length Trains and Aeroplanes quietly in during the last week of the year, but really, it’s just setting Modern Inventors up for a great 2013. The band had been plugging away this year, covering McCartney songs and appearing on the air with Helen Leicht, opening shows for Ben Solee at the TLA and Cliff Hills at World Cafe Live at the Queen, and sneaking up to Brooklyn for a Backyard Brunch session.With the album out, we get to hear the full range of a group that started out as a collaboration between singer-songwriters Matt Kass and Josh Benus. I caught up with Kass over e-mail today to get the details on Trains and Aeroplanes and more.

The Key: You perform often as an acoustic duo or trio, but the album has a lot of range – there’s big rock moments that might be unexpected, depending on how people were introduced to the Modern Inventors. Did you want the record to stretch your sound, or was the bigger rock-ness always in the cards?

Matt Kass: I think we’ve always wanted to have a full band, and the duo and trio thing is just a way for us to perform in situations where a band normally wouldn’t be appropriate. It’s great for support sets, because we can come in and play in whatever configuration the headliner wants. But ultimately, when we’re writing these songs, we’re thinking of the full band arrangement. I think as we play more and do more of our own shows, you’ll find us playing with a full band.

TK: You and Josh originally began working together because you were going to produce his solo record. How did it turn into a new band? Was there a moment in the studio where it “clicked?”

MK: Well, Josh and I have known each other for like 6 years now. He played in a band that used to open for my old band, The Brakes when we would play in New England. He came to a Brakes show at Mercury Lounge in 2008 and asked me to produce his solo record. I liked the idea, and I could tell my band was winding down, so I jumped at the chance to make his record.

We went into the studio under the assumption that this was going to be a solo record, but as we started writing and recording, it became clear to me that this could be more than just a producing thing. The songs that he was writing, and the direction we were taking the project became very similar to the sound I had in my head….I had a feeling from very early on that this would turn into something more, but I don’t feel I was ready at the time to jump head first back into a band. I think maybe it clicked for me when he moved down to Philly, after that it started to feel like a real thing.

TK: Who rounds out the Inventors and how did they come into the fold?

MK: Well at its core it’s just Josh and I, but we’re lucky to have some really talented friends who want to play with us. If you look at the liner notes, there’s at least 20 other musicians besides the two of us that play on the record. It’s kind of crazy…

Someone who’s been with us on and off since basically the beginning is Zach Djanikian. Zach was the lead singer and bass player in The Brakes and I’ve known him since we were like 12. I had him play bass on Josh’s first solo recordings and he helped us record the Paul McCartney cover.

We also have Will Wright and Tom Spiker play bass, Will is a great young player, and Tom owns the studio that where we do most of our recording. Tom is pretty involved in our recording process too, I don’t think we would have been able to release the record without him.

Tonight we have Dave Streim playing keyboards, and Matt Scarano playing drums. Dave grew up in Lower Merion with Zach and I, and we knew each other from playing in Jazz band and stuff, and I met Matt when I was playing guitar for Ross Bellenoit. They’re both incredibly talented players. We also have some friends from NYC play with us too, Spence Cohen who played in the last iteration of The Brakes and Mike Riddleberger who was in Quintus and Krystle Warren & The Faculty with Zach.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, I think the over arching theme is that we really wanted to associate our selves with people who are genuine and real, being talented is a prerequisite. There is so much bullshit in this industry, that if you don’t surround yourself with people that you want to pick up the phone and call, then I think you’re going to eventually start hating what you do. In that sense, we’ve been really fortunate so far.

TK: There’s an undercurrent of soul in your sound, whether it’s on the singer-songwriter side or the rock side – especially when it comes to the harmonies. How did soul music in general (or Philly soul in specific) shape your suond?

MK: Hmm, I haven’t really thought of it until now. Josh’s voice has a lot of range to it, and I know he listens to a bunch of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. We do some old soul covers when we’re playing as a duo, for fun…maybe it’s crept into the music through that? Otherwise, I’ve been watching a lot of ‘Daryl’s House’ on TV lately. thats about it.

TK: What can we expect from your album release at JBs tonight?

MK: Well, tonight is our first headlining show in Philly, and its the album release…so we’ll play a bunch of songs off the record, and some newer ones that nobody knows yet. We’ve got a few surprises, some special guests, we’ve had a lot of requests to play the McCartney cover. That may or may not happen…

I’m also really excited that Hezekiah Jones and Shark Tape said yes playing with us. I’ve known Raph for a while, his songs are so understated and powerful. I’m a big fan, plus he’s the only other dude in Philly that plays guitar left handed and upside down! I first heard Shark Tape one day on XPN while I was driving around town, and really dug it. I got in touch with them through Dan Reed, and we’re excited to have em! Oh, and our record is going to $5 tonight only. I think there are still some tickets left as of now.

Los Angeles indie-folk duo Homesick Elephant returns to the city of its birth tonight to play a set at The Fire. The duo of Sara FitzSimmons and Kevin Kelley got started by playing the venue’s open mic nights before they moved out west, and since they’ve been away they’ve recorded a handful of EPs and a great full length (2011′s The Pilgrim and the Pen). Soulful Philly roots rockers Modern Inventors are gearing up to release their debut full-length, Trains and Aeroplanes, later this month. The album is now available for pre-order at Bandcamp, along with name-your-own-price downloads of two songs – “Hello” and “Goodbye Northbrook Drive.” The band is celebrating the release of the album at Johnny Brenda‘s on December 28 with Philly folk ensemble Hezekiah Jones and indie-rockers Shark Tape – a lineup that, in a way, spans both halves of the Inventors’ world. Kuf Knotz, Modern Inventors, The Districts and more to perform Beck’s “Song Reader” at World Cafe Live on 01/08

We’ve all heard about it by now: Beck, the cutting-edge musician who gave us leaf blowers on stage and the 1994 hit “Loser,” set forth his latest release in an unconventional medium – a songbook. Available this week and distributed by McSweeney’s and Faber, Song Reader: Twenty New Songs by Beck features unrecorded songs in sheet music form, up to interpretation by those adventurous enough to step into its full-color illustrations and lush binding:

“The songs here are as unfailingly exciting as you’d expect from their author, but if you want to hear “Do We? We Do,” or “Don’t Act Like Your Heart Isn’t Hard,” bringing them to life depends on you.”

Over a dozen local musicians have accepted Beck’s challenge and will perform their interpretations of the compositions at World Cafe Live on Tuesday, January 8th. Philly punk rockers The Menzingers released their major label debut On the Impossible Past in February after wowing Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records founder Brett Gurewitz. Tonight, the Scranton-born outfit opens for New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem at The Electric Factory. Tickets and more information can be found here. For their final installment of PhilaMOCA‘s Tuesday Tune-Out series, JUMP Philly signed up indie quartet The National Rifle. The local band is gearing up to release their first full-length Almost Endless, recorded with Brian McTear (Shaking Through Series, Sharon Van Etten) and Jon Low (Twin Sister). Tonight’s set at PhilaMOCA will be followed by a screening of 1979 cult action film The Warriors; more information can be found here. Singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne brings her “Up Close and Personal” tour to World Cafe Live tonight. Lynne will perform a solo acoustic set of songs from her recent Revelation Road Deluxe Edition release, her thirteenth studio album. Experimental dream-pop group Twin Sister play Union Transfer tonight with School of Seven Bells. The Long Island band released their most recent album, In Heaven, last year. Philly rock outfit Modern Inventors traveled up 95 in October to participate in Brooklyn’s Backyard Brunch Sessions. With a format similar to Philly’s own Bands in the Backyard, BBS host Dave Chaitt invites bands into his backyard for an afternoon of music and home-cooked food (though this particular session appears to have occurred inside). Several Philadelphia area bands have been featured in past sessions, including XVSK, Family Band and The Spinning Leaves.

Modern Inventors, preparing for the release of their debut album Trains and Aeroplanes, played a mix of old and new songs at the final BBS session of the season. Omnipresent New York concert archivists NYCTaper were on the scene with their professional recording equipment, which means you can now download Modern Inventors’ entire session for free here. Gearing up for their show at The TLA on Wednesday, local song-crafters Modern Inventors have released the single to their upcoming debut album Trains & Aeroplanes as a free download on Soundcloud. “Hello” is a catchy, well-built rock song with hints of Wilco and The Hold Steady woven throughout the guitar riffs and punchy drum line. The band also recorded an acoustic version of the song when it appeared on the Leicht Lunch this summer, and you can stream and download both versions below. Night Market Philly, a free, food-centric street festival, is coming to Mt. Airy tonight. The event features 50+ food trucks and restaurants, as well as a music provided by WXPN. Grammy-nominated R&B artist Ryan Shaw, singer Ginger Coyle and Americana band Reckless Amateurs will be playing live sets throughout the night. Philly indie rock band Turning Violet Violet is playing Kung Fu Necktie tonight with Birthmark (Nate Kinsella from Joan of Arc) and The Sky Drops. Tonight singer-songwriter Cliff Hillis celebrates the release of his latest album, Dream Good, with an official Philly record release show upstairs at World Cafe Live. The album is Hillis’ first release in three years and the show includes a performance by the Philly indie rock band Modern Inventors (who recently recorded with WXPN’s Helen Leicht on Leicht Lunch). French electronic band M83 are bringing their ambient vibes to the Electric Factory before they head to Lollapalooza and then continue their extensive three month-long U.S. tour. Emerging Philly rock group Modern Inventors paid a visit to the Leicht Lunch today to play a couple of acoustic songs for XPN’s Helen Leicht. The new band is a collaboration between Matt Kass, formerly of The Brakes, and Josh Benus, and they play World Cafe Live on Aug. 1 opening for Cliff Hills, and then World Cafe Live at The Queen on Aug. 4 with Suzie Brown. Today is Paul McCartney’s 70th birthday and WXPN’s is paying tribute to Sir Paul by playing lots of Paul’s solo music along with covers of his music buy various local bands including Birdie Busch, Hank’s Cadillac, Brother Eye, Juston Stens & the Get Real Gang and others. Below, listen to the Modern Inventors’ cover of “Every Night,” and “Put It There” by Griz. Tonight, at World Cafe Live there will be a special Philly Rising Open Mic: Beatles Edition hosted by Boy Wonder starting at 6:30. At 8 PM Helen Leicht will host a special Philly tribute to McCartney with Juston Stens & the Get Real Gang, Tom Hamilton, Jen Creed, Griz, Adams Wilson Band, Hank’s Cadillac, Graham Alexander and many others.
