My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James has a cool, eclectic solo album coming out next month called Regions of Light and Sound of God. With its haunting electronic tones and subdued arrangements, it most closely recalls the work he did with My Morning Jacket on 2006′s Z – and I’m thinking it will sound positively stunning in the cozy confines of Johnny Brenda‘s on February 18. Tickets go on sale this Friday, January 18, at noon. Below, listen to “A New Life” from Regions of Light and Sound of God, which is out on ATO Records on February 5th.

Tonight XPN welcomes My Morning Jacket with special guests Band of Horses to the Mann Center for a rockin’ all-ages event. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $29.50 to $48.50 and can be purchased here.

Philly musician Michael Johnson’s solo project, Ape School, is celebrating the release of their new LP, Junior Violence, tonight with a show at Johnny Brenda’s. The 21+ event features performance by Norwegian Arms, Jeff Zeigler & Mary Lattimore, Laser Background, and Adam & Dave of The War on Drugs will be DJing throughout the night. Doors for the 21+ show open at 8PM and the show starts at 9:15 p.m. Tickets are available here for $10.

New Multitudes is being released on Rounder Records on February 28th. The band performs Union Transfer on Tuesday, March 13th. Go here for tickets and more information about the show. Set to coincide with the centennial celebration of Woody Guthrie’s birth year, New Multitudes will be released February 28 on Rounder Records as a 12 track release and a 23 track deluxe, limited edition. The limited edition features original Guthrie lyric sheets, the 12 track release, and 11 additional compositions recorded by Farrar and Parker. The album will also be available on vinyl. Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Woody’s daughter, to tour the Guthrie archives, each of the four songwriters were offered the chance to plumb and mine the plethora of notebooks, scratch pads, napkins, etc. for anything that might inspire them to lend their voices and give the words new life.

Her music—a blend of big-voiced folk and poetic pop—isn’t typical by any indie-rock standard. And yet, the songs aren’t simply esoteric attempts to prove Case’s vocal chops or songwriting skills (which she certainly has), they’re genuinely powerful. When Case sings, you forget that you’re listening to a record. It’s more like tuning into someone’s diary—if their diary were a whirlwind of narratives, metaphor and anthemic, poignant choruses. All of which makes Neko Case a good match for headliners My Morning Jacket, and so far on this tour she’s joined frontman Jim James on several duet covers. Neko Case performs with My Morning Jacket at 7:30 p.m. at The Mann Center; tickets to the all-ages show are $29.50–$44.50.

Friday, August 27: Philly noise-pop quartet Arc In Round—led by local producer and Uniform Recording studio owner Jeff Zeigler—performs new tracks from its upcoming EP at Johnny Brenda’s (9 p.m., $10); Tre Orsi and Busses open. If you prefer your noise-rock less dreamy and more trashy, Pissed Jeans will be at Danger Danger Gallery with openers Unnatural Helpers and Hot Guts. Long Island post-hardcore quartet Envy On The Coast plays the first of three farewell shows this weekend before calling it quits at First Unitarian Church (7:30 p.m., $15); Terrible Things and Loyal Divide open. Touch And Go Fanzine co-founder Tesco Vee sign copies of Touch and Go—The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ’79-’83 at Brickbat Books (7 p.m., free).
