Living in Sudan, London and Ohio would be an interesting way to grow up. Playing in session bands with the likes of Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou and Of Montreal would be interesting. Performing and recording music with such varying genre influences as free jazz, funk rock, krautrock and Sudanese pop is interesting. In full Ahmed Gallad, better known as Sinkane, is interesting, and tonight he will bring all these life experience and influences to Johnny Brenda’s. To get tickets or for more information head to the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →

Recap: Natalie Prass delighted NonCOMM with a stunning set of solo pop

Richmond singer-songwriter Natalie Prass has gotten a lot of praise for her lushly arranged debut album. But for her appearance at NonCOMM, she took it down as minimal as it would go. Two guitars – one played by her, one by her bandmate and producer Trey Pollard – and her dulcet voice delivering quirky pop, and they totally nailed it. “We’ve never played this many songs with just the two of us,” Prass told the crowd. But the minimal approach allowed for a focus on the songs, and jams like “Bird of Prey” are just as catchy with two people as they would be with ten. Check out photos from the set in the gallery below. Natalie Prass brings her debut LP to Boot & Saddle tonight. You might recognize her as the keyboard player on Jenny Lewis’s tour last year, but this first offering from the Cleveborn singer-songwriter shows her talents reach much further than piano. Her “Bird of Prey” single was XPN’s Gotta Hear Song of the Week back in January, its playful yet self-assured arrangements of horns and strings buoying Prass’s up close and personal vocals. Listen to the song below and pick up tickets for tonight’s show with Lady Lady here.
