It’s never a good idea to judge a band by its name — except in the case of Free Cake for Every Creature,  the rare instance of a band name whose charming and playful name happens to perfectly mirror their music. With lyrics like “For you I’d steal a 50-cent machine / and we won’t need money or anything / cause we’ll have gumballs,” the Philly-via-Upstate New York four-piece emit a delighful lo-fi pop vibe that’s reminiscent of Double Double Whammy label-mate Frankie Cosmos. They’re gearing up to release their newest record Talking Quietly of Anything With You in April, and tonight you can find them at the First Unitarian Church. Funky Friday: Roots Picnic edition

Mantua Family Day Festival presents Old School Concert ft. Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick, and more on August 27th

Each summer, the Mantua Community Improvement Committee presents the Mantua Family Day Festival, drawing over 7,000 people and featuring traditional community-friendly activities including carnival rides, games, and vendors. This year, the festival’s seventh anniversary will include an old-school concert, featuring the likes of legendary artists such as Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick, Chubb Rock, and Kwame. Dr. Chuck Williams of Fox News will host the show.

Fourth Wall Arts will be running two daytime events from noon–4 p.m. They will first feature a local artist performance showcase, and will then host an emcee competition. Both events are accepting submissions for participants; you can apply to compete by emailing info@fourthwallarts.com.

The festival will take place at 34th & Mantua Avenue on August 27th, from noon–8 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, August 28th. For more information, visit the Facebook event here, or the official festival website here.
