Tonight’s Concert Picks: DeVotchKa at The Trocadero, Django Django at Union Transfer, Norwegian Arms at PhilaMOCA, Brethren at The Grape Room

devotchkaDenver’s DeVotchKa bring their chamber orchestra project to The Trocadero tonight.  After recording a live album with the Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Eastern European-influenced quartet hit the road with a chamber orchestra to bring the full and intricate layers of an orchestral performance to smaller stages.  The band is also testing out new material that will be recorded as a follow-up to 2011′s 100 Lovers.  Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show with Pearl and the Beard can be found here.  Below, watch DeVotchKa perform “All the Sand in All the Sea” live at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony.

My Morning Download: “Television” by You Won’t (playing Johnny Brenda’s Friday, November 30th)

You Won’t are the Cambridge, Massachusetts duo of singer/guitarist Josh Arnoudse and drummer Raky Sastri. Making music together for the last couple of years, You Won’t describe themselves as playing “strummy melodic eclectic lyrical folky rock n roll,” which pretty much sums up what they do. They have a penchant for some seriously melodic hooks and they have a commanding sense of dynamics. The songs on their debut album, Skeptic Goodbye – on Old Flame Records – often recall those first few Police albums for their sharpness and their to-the-point quirkiness. At the same time they’re capable of delivering gems like “Television,” (download it below) that would sound perfect at an indie rock hootenanny. Download “Sweetness” by Pearl and The Beard


Pearl and The Beard are a three piece from Brooklyn. Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price, and Jeremy Styles play a jubilant new brand of folk music with instrumentation that includes cello, guitar, glockenspiel, drums and accordion, and the band have wonderful harmonies and warm songs for singing on your back porch. The band have a new album out called Killing The Darlings on Family Records. Pearl and The Beard perform this Saturday, November 19th at World Cafe Live in the Kidrockers concert series. They are also playing on Sunday. December 4th at Kung Fu Necktie. Below, download the song “Sweetness” and watch a sound check video of them from their recent UK tour.
