The Week’s Best Free MP3s, incl. Khari Mateen, Plow United, Diplo

Local musician / producer Khari Mateen tossed in a cover of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” to celebrate the season.  Mateen gives the Porgy & Bess aria a funky make-over with staccato string parts and chunky beats.  Fun fact – the lyrics to “Summertime” were written by DuBose Heyward, a relative of local singer-songwriter Heyward Howkins.  Stream and download the cover below.

Two Folkadelphia Sessions this week – first up, an endearing acoustic performance by Laura Stevenson, followed by a rocking & rolling set from Brooklyn’s Plates of Cake.  The spectrum of music represented by these two sessions is Folkadelphia’s mission in action, i.e. presenting a braod definition of what it means to be “folk music.”  Stream and download two tracks below and dig in to the rest here.

Folkadelphia Session: Plates Of Cake

Here we are in the dog days of summer – it’s hot, it’s muggy, and we’re all banjo-ed out. We need some cool, refreshing, regenerative ROCK & ROLL, heavy on thirst quenching GUITAR RIFFS.

Back in April, our Brooklyn compadre Jonathan Byerley (who also releases Cohen-esque songs under his own name) brought his rock outfit Plates Of Cake into the XPN Performance Studio before their set at Pi Lam‘s annual Human BBQ all-day music extravaganza.

Byerley and co. mean business; they set up and launched into their set. The resulting 7 songs are lean, tightly played jams, perfect for driving around in your imaginary (or real, you could have a real) convertible, top down of course.

Let’s indulge in a little musical vacation with Plates of Cake before we have to go back to the real world.

Human BBQ XXXV in photos ft. Delicate Steve, Norwegian Arms, Ghost Light and more

West Philly’s long-standing punk rock frat Pi Lam threw its annual Human BBQ celebration (35 years strong!) this weekend with a stacked lineup of Philadelphia favorites like Cold Fronts, Norwegian Arms and Ghost Light as well as out-of-town artists like Delicate Steve. Check out scenes from the day-long musical endurance test in the gallery above.
