Local pop-rock outfit Free Energy play Johnny Brenda’s tonight for a show presented by Out of Town Films. Tonight’s event is the first in what Out of Town Films hopes to be a regular event, a showcase bringing high-caliber acts to smaller, more intimate venues. Free Energy recently announced details for their forthcoming sophomore record called Lovesigns, which will be released through the band’s own label on January 15th. Tickets for tonight’s 21+ show are $12; the doors will open at 8:00 p.m. Below, watch Out of Town Films’ video with Free Energy for “Hold You Close” from the summer.
Fans of all things funky and experimental have a couple reasons to take the Market-Frankford El out to Upper Darby this fall. The Tower Theater just announced an appearance from the wild-and-crazy Primus, fronted by bass-man Les Claypool and his off-kilter stylings. They’ll be playing in support of their 2011 release Green Naugahyde on Wednesday, Oct. 17 – tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster this Friday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m.
Also coming around this fall is a well-regarded weaver of electronic tapestries, Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights. Releasing danceable music at steady clip since 2006, he has built an impressive empire out of free download releases, and will play The Tower on Sunday, Nov. 4 – tickets are also on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.
You can scope Pretty Lights’ downloadable catalog here, and check out a classic Primus video below.

The album will be the trio’s first studio album in 11 years, and will feature original members Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Jay Lane. Despite the lack of official releases, the group has remained busy touring, most recently appearing at Bonnaroo 2011 in June.
Each fall tour date is being dubbed ‘an evening with Primus’ and will feature two full sets. The tour begins on September 23rd in Boston and concludes on October 22nd in Los Angeles. The group will stop in Upper Darby, PA on October 1st at the Tower Theatre. Presale tickets are available now for all dates here.
