We’ve been devotees of Sam Cook-Parrott’s Radiator Hospital since catching him opening for Ted Leo at Nacho House in West Philly a couple years back. The project has taken a bit of time off from the Philadelphia stage since a November gig opening for Max Levine Ensemble at PhilaMOCA – though last summer, they crushed a pair of shows at Graffiti Pier and at Union Transfer opening for Screaming Females – but they make their local return on Thursday, May 12th when they headline an all-ages gig at PhilaMOCA.

Split EPs can often feel scatterbrained. They are, after all, recorded by two different bands. But on WeddingAlbum, a record put together by Great Thunder (featuring Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and her touring band mate Keith Spencer) and Radiator Hospital, there is no such discontinuity.
The cohesiveness is rather unsurprising, given the amount of collaboration between the two bands. Released on Stupid Bag Records, the record’s first side is technically Great Thunder territory, but Crutchfield and Spencer actually cover two original Radiator Hospital tracks with “Sleeping House” and “Big Cloud.” The latter is one of the record’s highlights — Crutchfield and Spencer provide a shot of punk adrenaline into what was originally a light hearted, playful track. Featuring Waxahatchee’s quintessential driving guitars and Crutchfield’s layered unison vocals, “Big Cloud” would have been right at home on Ivy Tripp. Continue reading →
On Saturday night, New Jersey’s Screaming Females ended their four week tour at Union Transfer with a set demonstrating that in their tenth year, they deserve all the good things coming to them. Focusing heavily on their new album, Rose Mountain, the songs translated well from basement show fare to something dare-I-say stadium ready. That might be a scary thought to some punk fans, but seeing Marissa Paternoster shredding for the masses rather than some dude from Walk the Moon is way more satisfying if you ask me. Okay, yes, obviously with our week full of coverage of Hop Along’s new album Painted Shut, we think you should go to the Hop Along show tonight. But you know what? The first Love on the Streets Festival to benefit the Paine’s Skate Park Funk is a daytime concert, and the music is just as great, making it the perfect pre-party. West Philly folky punk faves Radiator Hospital headline, along with pop anthem machine W.C. Lindsay, buzzing emo four-piece Clique (who open for Hop Along later tonight) and the hard-hitting Dogs On Acid (featuring Joe Reinhart of Hop Along). Earlier in the day there are performances by EDM-leaning artists Moon Bounce, Jack Deezl and Mister Sampson, plus skate and circus arts demos. It’s gonna be a great time; more information here. Tonight, Johnny Brenda’s will help raise money for the documentary-in-progress, Voice Of The Eagle: The Enigma Of Robbie Basho, a study of the late and influential steel guitar player and composer. Like 2013’s Something Wild, the new album revolves around the timeless themes of unrequited love, heartache and moving on. However, the new music sounds more polished, mature and definitely darker. In particular, the tracks like “I’m All Right” and “181935” have very minimal instrumentation, allowing lead vocalist Sam Cook-Parrot’s voice to serenade the audience. One of the many cool things about the album is the track “Firework” where Maryn Jones from All Dogs sings about a night with her lover and then, on “Fireworks (Reprise)” Cook-Parrot responds by singing the same lyrics in a different manner. Both artists give the song different feels, pointing out the different layers that Torch Song has.
Look out for vocals from Waxahatchee on “Blue Gown” and “Five and Dime”; Schemmer sings “Honeymoon Phase” too. It’s another great album from Radiator Hospital and points to even greater things in the future. Listen to “181935” below.
