Philly indie rock four-piece Readership channels the 80s underground on Hackbreaker

Local indie four-piece Readership are big fans of the 80s college rock era; any listen to their back catalog would have hinted this. For their new EP Hackbreaker, out November 2nd, they bring that loving homage to the forefront.

Two short and fun tracks from the EP are streaming at Readership’s Bandcamp right now. There’s “Meet Me At The Mall,” a B-52s via Mission of Burma jam that is markedly different from “Let’s Go To The Mall” (shoutouts How I Met Your Mother fans) in terms of its musical influence, but with lyrical references to food courts and Radio Shack, the spirit of 80s suburban commerce is there. “My Sitcom With Keven James” is a but more Athens, Georgia derived — not explicitly R.E.M., nor Camper Van, but somewhere between those two worlds over the course of a boot stomping minute 39. Last year, the South Philly singer and songwriter released The Jacqueline Show, an imaginative album that blended positive melodies, slice-of-life storytelling and Constance’s voice (which reminds us of a young Jill Scott). Check out the video for “Good Life” (featuring Antwan Davis) below, and get tickets and more information on the show at the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →

It’s jangling guitars and world-weary words are totally drawn from the rock anthems of R.E.M. and U2 (not, like, Songs of Innocence U2. more like Boy-era U2), but the moments of overdrive and chaos give new Philly trio Readership a nice punk edge. The band recently released its self-titled debut single – available as a free download on Bandcamp – and plays its first Philly show of 2015 on Friday night. Continue reading →
