Tonight’s Concert Picks: Ellie Goulding at The Electric Factory, Auctioneer with Ross Bellenoit at Puck, Leather at Kung Fu Necktie, Dope Body at The Depot, Riley Road at World Cafe Live at The Queen, XPN Welcomes Tommy Conwell to The Blockley

Following up her Free at Noon performance today, Ellie Goulding headlines the Electric Factory tonight.  The British electronic / pop musician released her LP Halcyon late last year after topping both BBC’s The Sound Of 2010 poll and the Critic’s Choice Award at The Brit Awards that same year. Blending infectious synth hooks and soulful singer-songwriter lyrics, Goulding has placed herself in the center of a resurging musical venn diagram that includes Lykke Li, Jesse Ware and Emeli Sande.  Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show can be found here.  Below, watch the video for Halcyon single “Anything Could Happen.”

Download “Silver Spring” by Speedy Ortiz (playing Kung Fu Necktie on 1/1)

If you were at Space 1026 a few weeks ago to see Thurston Moore & John Moloney (yes, that night) perhaps you caught Massachusetts outfit Speedy Ortiz as well.  The math-y grunge rock band released their Sports EP on Exploding in Sound Records in June and is offering up “Silver Spring” as a free sample.  While Speedy Ortiz has certainly quilted together their own sound with boulder-sized guitar riffs and front-woman Sadie Dupuis’ sweetly aggressive vocals, “Silver Spring” nods heavily and happily in the direction of Thurston Moore (“Queen Bee and Her Pals” comes to mind) and 90s art-rock (that infectious, angular hook).  Speedy Ortiz returns to Philly for a show with Roomrunner and Sore Saints at Kung Fu Necktie on Tuesday, January 1st.  Tickets and information for the 21+ show can be found here.  Below, stream and download “Silver Spring.”
