Tonight’s Concert Picks: DeVotchKa at The Trocadero, Django Django at Union Transfer, Norwegian Arms at PhilaMOCA, Brethren at The Grape Room

devotchkaDenver’s DeVotchKa bring their chamber orchestra project to The Trocadero tonight.  After recording a live album with the Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Eastern European-influenced quartet hit the road with a chamber orchestra to bring the full and intricate layers of an orchestral performance to smaller stages.  The band is also testing out new material that will be recorded as a follow-up to 2011′s 100 Lovers.  Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show with Pearl and the Beard can be found here.  Below, watch DeVotchKa perform “All the Sand in All the Sea” live at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony.

Video: Norwegian Arms performs “Wolf Like a Stray Dog” for Brighton Sound Sessions; playing PhilaMOCA this Friday 3/8

NArmsPhilly folk-freaks Norwegian Arms recently performed a few songs for Brighton Sound Sessions. The first installment is a performance of “Wolf Like a Stray Dog,” the title track from their debut full-length which was just released in January. You can catch them this Friday at PhilaMOCA with Scott Churchman – who is releasing his new tape, Ignore that Noise – Laser Background, and Circadian Rhythms. Nightlands bring magic harmonies to Kung Fu Necktie (review, setlist, photos)

Standing front and center for Nightlands’ performance Saturday night at Kung Fu Necktie felt like standing in the entranceway of a grand cathedral, a choir’s golden melodies wafting through the air. It was a transportive, although not unexpected experience—when I spoke to front man/creator Dave Hartley about Nightlands’ live show a few weeks back, he told me he would focus mostly on the vocals. “I want to get some people who sing really well, and we’ll just sing together,” he said.

Said “people who sing well” were of Eliza Jones (of Buried Beds) and Jesse Moore (of Auctioneer/Ladies Auxiliary), who together with Hartley added heart and corporeality to songs which on record, twinkle with space-age mystery—while drummer Michael Johnson’s (Ape School) beats added velocity and momentum.
