Halloween Music Video Countdown: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell On You”

With Halloween just ten days away we’re taking a look at some of our favorite music videos appropriate for the season of the witch. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put A Spell On You,” written by Hawkins in 1956, is one of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll and a stone cold Fright Night classic. The blues-based swampy rocker has been covered by dozens of artists over the years including Nina Simone, The Birthday Party, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Shane McGowan and Bryan Ferry. A memorable live version of the song performed by Phil Lesh and Friends on Halloween 2007 in New York at the Nokia Theatre Times Square is below for you to download, yet Screamin’ Jay’s recording remains the definitive version for the candy coated season.
