Tonight’s Indie Rock Hit Parade packs a wallop in every sense of the word. At least, we think it does. Tune in at 11pm ET (or better yet, stay tuned after What’s The Frequency??? with John Vettese) for a full two-hour show! We’ll spotlight the new album from our friends Prince Rama, who you might remember premiered some new tracks in our studio late last year. Along with the spotlight, we’ll hear new songs from Philly’s Sheer Mag, Seattle’s Tacocat & Austin’s Shearwater. An American experience to be sure! Check out some of the tracks below…
Austin band Shearwater released their new album, Jet Plane and Oxbow, back in January, and visited KXT in Dallas to give listeners a taste of the album. Watch them perform “Pale Kings” below!
Not even the “Blizzard of the Century” can stop the Indie Rock Hit Parade from coming your way at 11pm ET tonight on WXPN! We’ve got plenty of sizzling treats to keep you warm, like an Album Spotlight on Adore Life, the new full-length from UK noise rockers Savages! Also some of these freshly roasted tracks will be in the mix, so look out below!
This week’s Gotta Hear Song of The Week is a cover of Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty duet, “Stop Draggin’My Heart Around,” by singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten and the Austin band Shearwater. The cover was released for Record Store Day this past Saturday on Sub Pop Records as a special limited edition 7-inch single. It was originally recorded for the A.V. Club Undercover video series.
The Austin, TX band Shearwater recently stopped by the XPN2 studios to perform songs from their newly released album, Animal Joy. Now you can stream the session whenever you like. Shearwater started out as the side project of Okkervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff. Now led entirely by Meiburg, Shearwater’s music has gone through many stylistic changes; from orchestral folk to experimental ambient to their newfound rock direction. We’ll hear live performances of songs from Animal Joy, and XPN2’s Eric Schuman talks with Meiburg about his creative journey and his life outside of music.

From NPR Music:
Even at its most tender and delicate, Animal Joy pairs Meiburg’s brainy proclamations with brawny, searching arrangements: Inventive percussionist Thor Harris leaves his reverberations all over the record, and he’s aided by terrific bassist Kimberly Burke and an impressive assortment of guests, including Wye Oak multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack. The common thread binding them all, and binding everything Shearwater does, is a love of big thinking — and a clear understanding that brains and beauty need never be mutually exclusive.
