Sofar Sounds has built up a reputation as an organization that puts together intimate house shows with some insane lineups. Add the two together and you get one massive concert series, bringing 1,000 musicians to 200 cities around the world — Philadelphia being one of them — to raise money for and gather in solidarity with refugees. SoFAR Sounds have been curating intimate living room shows in Philadelphia for five years now, bringing touring and local bands together in a kind of under-wraps-until-the-last-minute way that has resulted in some pretty spectacular performances. To celebrate this milestone, SoFAR Philly coordinators Carolyn Lederach and Ken Winneg have shared their top Sofar memories with us, from rooftop shows in Center City to holiday shows on a South Street balcony. Read what they have to say below, and be a part of the 5th anniversary event on Saturday, November 12th in South Philly by signing up here (hurry though, the early show is already sold out!).

Lou is a joint venture between New Jersey singer-songwriter Tess Emma and local rock outfit Modern Colour that caught our ear when they debuted back in March. With several months of shows and a Key Studio Session now under their belt, the group brought even more new songs to October’s semi-secret Sofar Sounds event. During their stripped-down set, Lou premiered the jangly “Devil’s Doo Wop,” which you can check out below. Learn more about Sofar Sounds here and catch Lou at Bourbon & Branch on January 31st.

Ottsville, Pa.’s Upperfields encompasses a laid-back, psych-folk sound that shines through in the new video for “Untethered Bells,” the final track from their latest, earthy EP, titled Waterways.

The four-piece performed “Untethered Bells” (catch the official EP version here) for SoFAR Philly, and the moody yet soothing track is reminiscent of tunes from bands like Fleet Foxes or The Shins. But overall, Upperfields has a sound that’s all their own. Continue reading →

South Philly’s The Naked Sun are facing Friday the 13th head-on by playing their first show of the year at Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville tonight. The last time we caught them live was back in December with friends DRGN King, Brian D.A. Strouse and Kalob Griffin Band at Sofar Sounds’ Christmas show. Adorned in “ugly” holiday sweaters and surrounded by twinkle lights and garland, the roots rock band filmed a live video of “Cosmic Winds” taken from their debut EP Space, Place and Time.  Check out the video below and get more information for tonight’s show with The John Hufford Band here. Stay tuned for announcements about their next release.

The result of said pairing is the track “Airliner.” The exclusive performance, which is technically not in a room as most SoFAR (Songs From A Room) sessions are, has the perfect breezy demeanor to balance its laid-back location.
