Videos In The Key Of Philly: The Dead Milkmen, The O’Jays, The Delta 72, The Hooters

Yesterday, we launched Songs In The Key of Philly, an eight-hour stream of Philly’s finest music throughout the decades. Below, we’ve posted a handful of choice videos from some Philly legends then and now. (Really, I’ll use any excuse we can to post that O’Jays “For The Love Of Money” clip—if I could make it autoplay at the top of every post, I probably would…)

Songs In The Key of Philly Playlist

SongsInTheKeyOfPhilly2What you are listening to here is Songs In The Key Of Philly, a looping channel or “stream” of music. When the stream of music popped up you may have noticed it was in the middle of the song. The reason for this is that the Digital Millenium Copyright Act which regulates internet webcasting specifies various compliance statutes related to streaming music on the internet. One of these is that this stream of music is only available as a looped archive. You will not be able to fast forward or find specific songs; you will however be able to kick back, turn up the volume and enjoy the music as it plays! The list of songs on Songs In The Key Or Philly includes:

This Monday: Songs In The Key Of Philly

Songs In The Key Of Philly
We started The Key because of our love (and your love) of Philly music. As we mention right up on our home page, Philly has long had “a rich musical history, a unique musical identity, and one of the nation’s most thriving musical communities.” From the days of American Bandstand right up to now, one could follow the musical timeline to find some of the most important music ever made. From the roots of rock and R&B, to jazz, folk, punk rock, psychedelic rock, indie rock, singer-songwriters, hip-hop, and the soulful jams of The Sound of Philadelphia, Philly—since the 1940s—has always been vibrant and significant as a musical city.

This Monday The Key, WXPN, and Y Rock on XPN are celebrating the music of Philly with “Songs In The Key of Philly.” The Key will be launching an 8 hour stream of Philly music; XPN and Y Rock will be having special programming throughout the day.

XPN’s musical coverage starts at 6AM on the Morning Show with Michaela Majoun, and continues with Helen Leicht, host of XPN’s Philly Local, from 10AM-2PM. We’ve got two incredible World Cafe shows from the archives—including a special show David Dye did with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff (2PM) followed by his interview with Hall & Oates along with their performance from Free At Noon (3PM). Dan Reed takes over at 4PM and will drop some classics from The Roots, Coltrane, Solomon Burke, Jaco Pastorious with Weather Report and more until 6PM

From 6PM until 8PM, we’re giving the mic to one of Philly’s icons, Jerry Blavat—The Geator With Heator—to take us down memory lane from the days before American Bandstand to the street corner sounds and rock and soul that laid the musical foundation of this great city. There is no one anywhere who can capture the energy and excitement of those times like The Geator. And once the Geator’s Rock & Roll Rhythm & Blues Express pulls back in to the station, Robert Drake will do a special two-hour all Philly Land Of The Lost (8PM-10PM), looking back at the great bands to come out of Philly’s new wave, rock and punk era.

Y Rock’s Songs In The Key of Philly salute starts at 10AM. Each hour the Y Rockers will be playing a mix of local indie artists highlighted by special sessions each hour with the following bands:
10 AM – Dr. Dog (FAN)
11 AM – THE ATOMIC SQUARES (Key Studio Session)
NOON – NEW MOTELS (Key Studio Session)
1 PM – THE PARTY PHOTOGRAPHERS (Key Studio Session)
2 PM – KUF KNOTZ (Key Studio Session)
3 PM – BUSSES (Key Studio Session)
4 PM – FREE ENERGY (FAN)

Tying all this together will be our special eight-hour, 100+ artists “Songs In The Key Of Philly” internet stream of Philly Music, which you’ll be able to listen to anytime, on your own time. Please join us this Monday on XPN or Y Rock or listen to our Songs In The Key Of Philly internet stream as we chart the musical time line of great Philly music.
