Born Clyde Vernon Landreth, guitarist Sonny Landreth is a guitarist’s guitarist. Born in Mississippi, his family settled in Lafayette, Louisiana. His first professional gig was as a guitarist with the legendary Clifton Chenier in the Red Beans and Rice Revue in the Seventies, before he stepped out on his own as a solo artist. Landreth released two albums in the Eighties which led to his being called upon by John Hiatt who enlisted his services on Hiatt’s classic 1988 Slow Turning album. A pair of excellent albums in the Nineties, 1992’s Outward Bound, and 1995’s South Of I-10, garnered Landreth even more praise and notoriety, and he went on to collaborate with Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Jimmy Buffett. It’s going to be a party at 69th Street tonight when EDM poster boy Porter Robinson will be at the Tower Theater performing his debut album Worlds, which was met with mostly positive reviews from critics. As Rolling Stone states, “Although it doesn’t sound quite like EDM, Worlds manages to retain the thrilling rush of emotions that the best raves inspire.” Robinson’s music may not sound like typical electronic dance music, but there’s something about it that gives you a jolt of positive energy. Innovative Philadelphia electro-pop group Gemini Wolf is opening for The Octopus Project tonight at North Star Bar. Gemini Wolf, which is made of Megan Cauley and Michael McDermott (who perform under the names Pandar and Mikronesia, respectively) released a 2011 LP Infinite Sand Dunes following their 2010 remix album, Rare But Serious Side Effects.
