Local indie rockers Southwork will play Johnny Brenda’s tonight, celebrating the release of its latest record Wear Your Heart Out.  The record was recorded in a South Philly row home on a reel-to-reel tape machine owned by frontman Mike Vivas’ cousins.  The recordings are raw and heartfelt, just fuzzy enough to sound like a warp-y dream.  Take a listen to “Tell You a Story” below and pick up tickets for the show with Tutlie and Purples here. Wish Southwork well on their SXSW travels at Boot and Saddle next weekend

southworkLocal indie rock / pop outfit Southwork hits the road at the end of the month for a tour that takes them to SXSW in Austin, TX and you can help send them off at Boot & Saddle on February 15th.  The seven-piece band (complete with a horn section) released their debut LP Arise at the end of 2012 and quickly followed it up with a four-song EP called Seasons Passing.  Though the heart of Southwork is anchored in fun and upbeat pop / rock melodies, the addition of glam rock drama and quirky instruments leads to more interesting recordings that reveal new surprises with each listen.  Tickets and information for the 21+ show with Killer Bands and S.T.O.P. can be found here.  Watch Southwork’s video for “My Demise” below.

Tonight’s Concert Picks: My Bloody Valentine at Electric Factory, Dresses at MilkBoy, Taj Mahal Trio at Grand Opera House, and more

My Bloody Valentine

Ethereal alt-rock icons My Bloody Valentine are bringing their elusive melodies and spidery vocals to Electric Factory tonight before they finish up their North American tour in New York. Dropping their anxiously anticipated third full length album mbv in February, Mark Richardson of Pitchfork gave it a 9.1 in his review saying, “mbv is an album of density with very little air or light. But it doesn’t forgo the human touches that have made this band so special.” Find tickets and details for tonight’s show here. Get ready for the show by watching their London performance of “Soon” below.

Stream a new Southwork track, “Trapped” (playing Johnny Brenda’s on 12/13)

This morning The Swollen Fox shared the groovy single “Trapped,” from Southwork‘s upcoming debut, Arise, which drops December 11. Southwork, the seven-piece collaboration led by former Fat City Reprise member Mike Vivas and Distant Orange brothers Al and Joe Smith, comes as something of a throwback to ’70s rock / ska pioneers with an anthemic vibe that’s hard to ignore. Check out the single here, and see Southwork perform at Johnny Brenda’s on December 13; tickets for the 21+ show can be found here.

Ride the magic bus with Southwork in the video for “My Demise”

This feels like something out of Hair, or maybe the last scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Seven-piece Philadelphia retro-rockers Southwork are releasing their debut LP Arise on December 11, and we got a taste this week in the music video for “My Demise.” There’s definite notes of 13th Floor Elevators and The Who, but it’s hard to say if it’s in a serious sense or a Monkees-ish satirical sense. Either way, it’s a great tune. Check it out below, and pre-order the LP here.
