With their latest record Hard Love still fresh on the shelves and a U.S. tour about to kick off at Union Transfer on Friday, Philly rockers Strand of Oaks just released a beautiful video for the album’s centerpiece, the aching piano ballad “Cry.”
The stark and minimal footage spotlights Oaks’ frontman Tim Showalter and his wife Sue, filmed in an intimate portrait style, listening to and reacting to the song. Sue looks pensive, she and Tim embrace; they step away, return to the center, tears are shed; and in the end, there’s goofy mugging for the camera and copious amounts of laughter. Continue reading →
With Hard Love finally out in the open and an extensive touring schedule imminent, you’d think we wouldn’t be hearing anything new from Strand of Oaks for a while. Well, rhetorical third person, you’d be very, very wrong.
Somewhere in the midst of the album’s busy press cycle, Timothy Showalter found time to record a few homemade covers for Aquarium Drunkard as part of their Lagniappe Sessions series. There’s a laid-back, groovy take on Phish’s “Dirt” — a recent convert as of last summer, Showalter refers to himself as “the newest Phish fan in the world” — a stripped-back, acoustic rendition of Primal Scream’s “Damaged,” and space-y exploration of The Stone Roses’ “Made of Stone.” You stream and download the set here. Philadelphia’s Strand Of Oaks is just one week away from dropping its latest LP, Hard Love. We’ve already heard two of its anthemic, hard-rocking singles, “Radio Kids” and “Rest Of It”, and while the former boasted both a traditional music video and a lyric video, the latter enjoyed no such luxury. That is, until now. Stream the lyric video for “Rest of It” below. Continue reading →
Next Friday, February 17th, Tim Showalter’s project, Strand of Oaks, is throwing an in-store listening party at Manayunk’s Main Street Music to celebrate the debut of his newly released album, Hard Love — and it’s sure to be a grand ole’ time. Not only do party-goers get to jam out to some awesome new tunes, but those buying LP’s that night will also be treated to an on-the-spot, Showalter designed album sleeve, and have a chance at winning a cassette boom box also concocted by Showalter. In the days leading up to the election, a project called 30 Days, 30 Songs brought together protest songs from high-profile acts like Death Cab for Cutie, Jim James, and Franz Ferdinand. There was so much artist support that the number quickly ballooned to 50 songs, and now, with the help of the Secretly Group, they’re doubling even that. Continue reading →
Last month, Strand of Oaks shared “Radio Kids”, the anthemic lead single from upcoming LP Hard Love. Now, Brussels’ AB Session has shared a stripped-down performance of the track that forgoes the blaring guitars and drums in favor of an arresting piano ballad. Where the full band version feels inviting and celebratory, this renditioin is stark and meditative, allowing its nostalgic lyrics to take on new meaning.
It’s a bit of a tear-jerker, so if you don’t feel like sobbing at your desk, this is definitely NSFW. If you are, in fact, prepared, then grab a box of tissues and stream the session below. Continue reading →
