In the days leading up to the election, a project called 30 Days, 30 Songs brought together protest songs from high-profile acts like Death Cab for Cutie, Jim James, and Franz Ferdinand. There was so much artist support that the number quickly ballooned to 50 songs, and now, with the help of the Secretly Group, they’re doubling even that. Continue reading →

Last month, Strand of Oaks shared “Radio Kids”, the anthemic lead single from upcoming LP Hard Love. Now, Brussels’ AB Session has shared a stripped-down performance of the track that forgoes the blaring guitars and drums in favor of an arresting piano ballad. Where the full band version feels inviting and celebratory, this renditioin is stark and meditative, allowing its nostalgic lyrics to take on new meaning.

It’s a bit of a tear-jerker, so if you don’t feel like sobbing at your desk, this is definitely NSFW. If you are, in fact, prepared, then grab a box of tissues and stream the session below. Continue reading →

Well Philly, you are in for a treat. But it happened in Delaware first.

The debut of Strand of Oaks‘ new material from the forthcoming Hard Love album happened in a barn in Delaware in front of a crowd that ranged in age from 10 to 70. “This music is for everyone who needs it right now,” frontman Timothy Showalter mentioned before the show. “As much as Heal was pointing inward, Hard Love [points straight out]. It’s an important time for that, we’re not playing around anymore.”

Tim Showalter, the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of Strand Of Oaks, was three albums deep into his career when he released his breakthrough, 2014’s HEAL. It changed the Philadelphia musician’s life, led him to months on the road, playing in front of increasingly larger crowds than ever before. An ensuing series of very personal life experiences took emotional toll on Showalter’s being. Continue reading →

Last December, after a hard year and a half on the road promoting the HEAL LP, Philly’s Strand of Oaks closed the year by playing back to back intimate gigs at South Philly’s Boot and Saddle. It was billed as an anything goes night: covers, deep cuts, comedy. And the resulting shows were such a positive experience that Oaks main man Tim Showalter decided to revive the Oaks Winter Classic this year. Continue reading →

For the second year in a row, hometown hero Strand of Oaks will close out twelve months of big moments with back to back shows at Boot & Saddle, dubbed the “Winter Classic.” Tim Showalter will perform two nights of “stripped way down” sets on December 2nd and 3rd, playing songs from his own catalog as well as some covers (and maybe even a few new tracks, if we’re extra lucky).
