NonCOMM Recap: Sweet Spirit blows the roof off of World Cafe Live

Sweet Spirit are the powder keg of NonCOMM, just waiting to explode given the opportunity. Thursday night on the upstairs stage at World Cafe Live, the band had their chance. World Cafe host Talia Schlanger introduced the band by asking the crowd to feel their foreheads, received with confusion among the crowd. Schlanger followed it up quickly, saying “I guarantee you it will be dripping by the end.” She wasn’t wrong.

Early on in their set, Sweet Spirit entranced the crowd with the relatively tame 2015 track “Rebel Rebel.” In the back half of the song, bassist Jon Fichter lead the band in a campfire roundabout rendition of the track’s chorus, with the rest of the bandmates huddled around their mics repeating the chorus delayed. The building mash up of vocals launched the band into an explosive finale. Leading into “Baby When I Close My Eyes,” the band kept the tempo high throughout the rest of their set. Continue reading →

XPN Fest Recap: Sweet Spirit has no shame on the River Stage

Sweet Spirit | photo by Wendy McCardle for WXPN

Midway through Sweet Spirit‘s Sunday afternoon River Stage set Sabrina Ellis told the crowd she’s impossible to embarrass. She doesn’t mind how she comes off as a person. Then, only for a half sentence, she retracted. “The only thing that humbles me down to a slithery, slimy, pre-evolution being…I just can’t think of anything,” she joked. Continue reading →

Break Prep: New Broncho, Downtown Boys & Shilpa Ray on the Indie Rock Hit Parade

Broncho | Photo by Pooneh Ghana, courtesy of the artist

This week’s Indie Rock Hit Parade will be the last one for a little bit, but believe me I have a very good excuse. Listen at 11pm ET on XPN (right after a week-early edition of Land of the Lost with Robert Drake) for a full two-hour show that’ll hopefully tide you over until our post-XPNFest return. In the spirit of next weekend’s bonanza, we’ll hear from a few IRHP favorites who’ll be joining us at the festival, like Sweet Spirit, Strand of Oaks and Hop Along. We’ll also sample new releases from bands who won’t be at the festival (not this year, anyway). Listen for new singles from Providence political punks Downtown Boys, NYC’s preeminent ‘door girl’ Shilpa Ray, and a roadtrip-ready track from Oklahoma’s Broncho. Preview some of those new tracks below…

One of the newer bands we’re excited to see at the XPOnential Music Festival on Sunday, July 30, is the Austin band Sweet Spirit. An XPN Artist To Watch this past May, the band played an exuberant, fun Free At Noon in April, and lead singer Sabrina Ellis, a rock star in the making, will likely win over more fans at the forthcoming performance. Austin, Texas rock and roll force of nature Sweet Spirit just got added to the XPoNential Music Festival, and excitement for them is high around here at XPN HQ. They played a powerful #FreeAtNoon concert this spring in support of their new album St. Mojo, following it up with a set that night at Manayunk’s Dawson Street Pub. More recently, the band was named  XPN’s Artist to Watch for the month of May.

Today, in addition to the news that they’ll be on XPNFest, we’re excited to bring you Sweet Spirit’s new music video for “The Power” from St. Mojo. It sees the band performing to a lab-coat crowd in a dystopian, clinical setting before exploding into Flaming Lips-y glittery light and color on the chorus, where frontwoman Sabrina Ellis sings about being the person you want to be, and discovering that person within. Last November we were graced with the presence of The Pretenders at a Free at Noon concert and as Helen Leicht pointed out, today we were treated to a set by a band that Chrissie Hynde & co. would probably be fans of. Austin’s Sweet Spirit stopped by World Cafe Live while in town supporting their sophomore LP St. Mojo, a record with track after track of confident rock that is pure fun.
