Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: The Black Angels

The Black Angels | Photo by Eric Schuman for WXPN

For this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade live session, we’re joined in the studio by The Black Angels. The band has acted both as torchbearers of gloomy, doomy psychedelia as well as cornerstones of their hometown’s experimental music scene. Along with a stellar catalog of albums and EPs, The Black Angels are the head honchos of Levitation, the gathering formerly known as Austin Psych Fest. Armed with a special array of (mostly) acoustic instruments, The Black Angels beamed themselves into our studio to perform selections from their newest album, Death Song.

Revisit Allah-Las’ appearance on World Cafe (playing Union Transfer on 4/7)

ALLCalifornians Allah-Las appeared on NPR’s World Cafe just a few weeks ago, chatting with host David Dye about their beginnings at famed Los Angeles music emporium Amoeba Records and playing a trio of songs from their 2012 self-titled debut, released through LA label Innovative Leisure.  Keeping with the California theme, the laidback, country-tinged album was produced by fellow statesman and World Cafe favorite Nick Waterhouse.  Listen back to Allah-Las’ World Cafe session here and watch a live video of “Tell Me (What’s On Your Mind)” from their October 2012 show at Johnny Brenda’s.  Allah-Las return to Philadelphia on Sunday, April 7th for a show at Union Transfer with The Black Angels and Elephant Stone; tickets and information for the all-ages show can be found here.

Out on Tuesday, the record sizzles in the signature Black Angels sound – thumping rhythms, droning guitars, spacey textures. The band makes its way to Philly next Sunday, April 7th for a show at Union Transfer, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets this week on The Key – just leave a comment below for your chance to win. Below, watch the band performing at Austin Psych Fest back in February.
