The Great Unknown are also celebrating a record release tonight over at Johnny Brenda’s. The local five-piece are setting forth So Strange and Loud into the physical world, following the album’s digital release last May. With reflective melodies and intricate arrangements, the The Great Unknown strive to make connections with their audiences both through live performance and recorded material. Tickets and information for tonight’s 21+ show with KC Jones and Ali Wadsworth can be found here. Below, stream “The Laws of Energy” from So Strange and Loud.

XPN welcomes Martin Sexton to The Landis Theater tonight. The singer-songwriter is a quintessentially American musician, blending a variety of traditional playing styles including country, rock, gospel and R&B. Following up his 2010 LP Sugarcoating, Sexton released his Fall Like Rain EP last year. Both efforts come after his commercial breakthrough with 2007′s Seeds, which debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show with The Alternate Routes in Vineland, NJ can be found here. Below, watch Martin Sexton perform “Can’t Stop Thinking ‘Bout You” with John Mayer.

Dave Hartley continues his busy start to the year with a Nightlands show at the Arden Gild Hall tonight. The solo project of the War on Drugs’ bass player, Nightlands released its sophomore effort Oak Island last week. The album fuses Hartley’s affinity for mystery and sci-fi with rollicking melodies and percussion, creating layer upon layer of rich textures through overdubbing and tape machine manipulation. Hartley spoke with ArtInfo recently to share some of his recording techniques and tricks; read the full interview here. Tickets and information for tonight’s show with School of Seven Bells can be found here. Below, watch the video for “I Fell In Love With a Feeling.”

Drawing influences from Talking Heads, Spiritualized and local 20th century painter Andrew Wyeth, Philly’s KC Jones has created a body of work that continues to reveal its complex nuances many listens in. 2012 saw the release of his Reckless EP, an exploration of drifting, ambient rock with some surprising instrumentation; the title track pairs the slow drawl of a violin and a pizzicato coda with a War on Drugs-esque bass line that Dave Hartley would be proud of. Throughout the EP, Jones’ vocals recall those of Tim Showalter (Strand of Oaks), with a weary but sturdy grasp on life and all its tribulations.

Moving forward to 2013, KC Jones released the full-length Sounds From the West just last week. West takes Jones’ sound in a new direction, moving from the electronic pop of lead track “So Sad” to the rock-structured “Hiding Behind Glass.” Named for Andrew Wyeth’s painting “Christina’s World,” West “follows a singular journey through the disconnect of life in a time of social and political strife.”

KC Jones will play Johnny Brenda’s on Saturday, February 2nd with The Great Unknown (celebrating the release of So Strange and Loud) and Ali Wadsworth. Tickets and information for the 21+ show can be found here. Stream “I.O.U.D.” from Sounds From the West below and download the name-your-price album on Bandcamp here.

The fourth annual 2nd Street Festival took over a bustling strip of Northern Liberties yesterday afternoon, filling some ten blocks with artists, crafters, local food vendors, and lots of music. Check out the gallery above for a photo recap of the street fair action, along with performances at The Piazza at Schmidts by Lushlife, The Great Unknown and Man Man – who wrapped up their early evening carnivalesque set just before storm clouds descended and the skies opened.

Here at The Key, we toss a fair heaping of free downloads your way, so it’s completely understandable if you miss a few. Here are our top five bits of digital music from the past week:

Richmond, Virginia musician Matthew E. White is releasing his album Big Inner on Hometapes/Spacebomb Records on August 21st, and plays the TLA on Oct. 11 with The Mountain Goats. This week, his song “Big Love” was a My Morning Download, and you can get it below.

On the heels of making an XPoFest splash a couple weeks ago (and tearing up The Barbary last week), Work Drugs released another track for free download from their album Absolute Bearing. Download “The Art of Progress” below – the band says it was “originally written in 1994 as a response to U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin signing the Kremlin accords.” You can also watch the music video here; Work Drugs next plays Philadelphia on Aug. 31 at Johnny Brenda’s.

Family Band celebrated the release of its excellent new record Grace and Lies this week by playing the First Unitarian Church’s side chapel, recording a Live at the World Cafe session and appearing live on the air for XPN2′s Folkadelphia. You can download their Folkadelphia performance of “Ride” below.

Northern Liberties’ 2nd Street Festival is going on today, and one of the great Philly bands playing the main stage at the Pizza at Schmidt’s is The Great Unknown, who were spotlighted in last week’s Key Studio Session. Download their performance of “Borrowed and Temporary” below, and catch them this afternoon at 4:15.

Borrowed and Temporaryby The Great Unknown, from The Key Studio Sessions, Aug. 1, 2012Download

As anticipation for their new record Soft Fall builds, Sun Airway released a mixtape on Wednesday that blends Bartok, Boards of Canada and The Chemical Brothers.

The Fourth Annual Second Street Festival kicks off today in Northern Liberties. The section between Germantown and Green Street will be closed off from noon to 10 p.m. for a free concert, festivities and fun. There will be musical acts on four different stages, sponsor tables, vendors selling food, drinks, jewelry, clothes, and other goodies. At 3 p.m. there will also be a pie eating contest at the Germantown stage. I might very well be entering, so that will be quite a sight to see.

Some of the featured performers for this year include headliner Man Man, as well as Blayer Point Dujour and the Rockers Galore, The Spinning Leaves, The Great Unknown, Lushlife, and many more.

If you’re planning on not staying too late in Northern Liberties, head over to World Cafe Live to see Steve Kimock‘s Summer Tour. Kimock is known for his improvisational stylings ranging from jazz to world fusion to funk and anything that inspires him at the time. He will be performing tonight along with Bernie Worrell. The show starts at 8 p.m., tickets are $20-30.
Blast to the past! Look back to 1995 when wearing plaid outfits was hip and boy bands were popular. Some of the all stars of decade will be featured in Party in Fairmount Park, including New Edition, Salt-n-Pepa, and El Debarge.
When it comes to cosmopolitan country music, The Great Unknown are a reliable local source, making mellow moves these past few years to Jordan “Tuck” Burger’s emphatic midtempo drumbeats and ringing out the three-part harmonies with lead singer and songwriter Todd Henkin at the center. The Philly four-piece’s new album, So Strange and Loud, blows its sound open into something more lush and expansive, big on the crescendos and shout-out-loud refrains. Before, they might have been Philly’s answer to The Band (for those who didn’t already consider Dr. Dog such); now, they could be (dare I say it?) our own Dawes. Their Key Studio Session, recorded in the round last week, kept things relative downtempo and contemplative, in classic Great Unknown style, but just you wait till they open for Man Man at the 2nd Street Festival this Sunday; Henkin promises electric guitars, organs, amps and a whole lot of energy.

The Great Unknown have released a new album, So Strange And Loud. You can listen to and buy the album here. The band rips a page or two from the classic Americana songwriting books of The Band, Dawes, The Avett Brothers and Wilco, yet the members of The Great Unknown put their own warm and unique spin on it. Here’s what they have to say about it:

Last winter we recorded So Strange and Loud in a beautiful circular three story cabin in the woods of Mystic, Connecticut.

In true DIY form, we turned the cabin into our studio using only an old 8 track reel to reel, a handful of well placed microphones, & an infinitely patient engineer.

The character of the location and the time we spent living together is all reflected in these songs.

This is the album that we’ve been working towards for the last five years and are proud to now share it with you.

The coffee shop, bar, and music venue joins the franchise’s two Main Line locations in Ardmore and Bryn Mawr. Like its sister sites, MilkBoy Philly will serve coffee as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare, with many vegetarian options available. The Center City spot is the first to hold a liquor license, and will feature a full bar on each of its two floors. The top floor will feature a 200-person standing room 21+ music venue, for which eight shows have already been announced. One highlight is sure to include a September 29th show with local Eastern European brass band-inspired collective West Philadelphia Orchestra and recent 2nd Street Festival performers, Philly band The Great Unknown. Other local acts with scheduled shows include Gang, Black Landlord, Meeting in the Aisle, and Man Like Machine.

Ticket prices for the concerts are cheap, ranging from $8 – $13.50, so be sure to check out the new venue and support some local music while you’re at it.

In fall 2010, Philly-based band The Great Unknown headlined a five-city tour for the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, a program that allows musicians to collaborate with youth in under-resourced neighborhoods. Each stop on the tour included three days of collaborative songwriting and recording between students and the band. The band worked with students from elementary and middle schools in Washington DC, Cleveland, Milwaukee, New York City and Boston. Five of the resulting original songs appear on The Great Unknown’s new album Other Voices, Other Rooms, which features lyrics written entirely by America SCORES students. The EP will be made available tomorrow, July 19th, for a price of your choosing. The Great Unknown will be donating all proceeds to the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES. Click here to pre-order the full album. Below, listen to a couple songs from the record.

The Philly Folk Parade took over the World Cafe Live stage earlier this afternoon for a special edition of XPN’s Free At Noon concert series. The lineup featured four groups from the local folk music collective, including The Great Unknown, Chris Kasper, Hezekiah Jones, and The Spinning Leaves. Though the artists were technically slated to perform just two songs apiece, members from each group joined one another throughout the entire show, keeping the stage alive and packed with up to 15 performers at once.

Alt-folk quartet The Great Unknown opened the show, backed by at least eight other members of the Philly Folk Parade. A prevailing first impression was simply how young and happy the assemblage was, and their energy was instantly felt throughout the room. They featured resonant electric violin and guitar on their second song, “We’ve Got Secrets,” which also included harmonies from all 12 musicians on stage.

Next up was Chris Kasper and his band. After an endearing opening song in which Kasper and fiddler Kiley Ryan harmonized “ooohs” and “aaahs,” the group fell into a serious folk groove for “Baltimore Street.” Members of the band remained on stage as they were joined by the next act, recent Shaking Through artist Hezekiah Jones. The stage was again filled, with even more members now playing harmonica, upright bass, and electric lap steel guitar. Their song “Cannonball” was a slower tune, held together tightly by incredible harmonica and electric guitar and fiddle solos.

Philly Folk Parade co-founders The Spinning Leaves were the last to perform, and by this time the stage was completely full of people singing and dancing. They began their set by leading the eager crowd in claps and stomps, and their positive energy was again infectious. The combination of their modern folk harmonies with traditional harmonica and electric guitar was unexpected and rich. All four groups from The Philly Folk Parade were a joy to watch. As long as these artists are around, there should be no doubt that folk music is alive and well in Philadelphia. —Claire Fishkow

You can listen to the full performance here (via NPR Music).

(Whatever, it's festive enough)

As producer of The Key Studio Sessions, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for this holiday: the wealth of musical talent in the Philadelphia region, and the number of those musicians who are stoked on performing for us. The incredible studio here at XPN where I can record, and this website where I can share those recordings with you. It’s been good vibes since The Key launched, for sure—but I promised Matt I wouldn’t go too Hallmark on everyone. So instead, I present you with The Key Studio Sessions Thanksgiving Playlist: a collection of 13 tracks from our archives, dating back to some of our earliest Philly Local sessions in 2008—when Jake Rabid and I used to record in Y-Rock’s broadcast studio (before moving over to the comparatively giant Live At The World Café performance space we use now). Ever wonder what a Marshall stack-wielding punk band sounds like when you squeeze them and all their gear in a tiny broadcast studio? Check out The Loved Ones’ rendition of “Louisiana” from April of ’08. (The answer: not bad, and no less impassioned.)

Most of these songs have a similar mood—warm, thoughtful, and/or sentimentalish, from Chris Archibald’s stirring solo performance of “Missing Piece” from Illinois’ March 2009 session, to Birdie Busch’s perennial favorite “Water” from earlier this year. Some are more melancholic (the haunting “Two Skeletons” by the late, great Brass), some romantic (Kurt Vile’s cover of Dim Stars’ “Monkey”). Seasonal themes are also hit on, such as travel (Writtenhouse’s bumpin’ “Mahogany Blue”) and harvest (or at least Hoots And Hellmouth always make me think of harvest anyway). And some songs have little to do with the holiday per se, but are simply incredible performances that I’m thankful I had the honor of recording (The Chimeras’ “Ridge Summit” still gives me chills). Pop this playlist on when you’re preparing dinner tomorrow, when you’re digesting and relaxing afterwards, or whenever you need a collection of reflective homegrown songs from right here in Philly. Happy Thanksgiving. (“Golden Turntable” photo by Neil Ian of Nimble Photography)

During the local quartet’s upcoming tour—which starts on October 22nd at the Appalachian Brewery Company, and includes stops throughout the Midwest—members of the band will participate in America SCORES, a national youth-development program that works with inner-city kids living in high-risk neighborhoods.

ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) have teamed up for a fifth year with America SCORES to bring musicians into under-funded urban schools that have little-to-no after-school programs. The band will work with third-to-fifth graders in Washington D.C., Cleveland, Milwaukee, and New York City. “I want to focus around the fact that kids can see themselves as important people, says guitarist and singer Todd Henkin. “I want to start it with each kid walking up to a video camera and saying, ‘This is my voice, and it’s important.’” The band plans to lead the students through a series of exercises—brainstorming, free-writing, guided conversations—gradually turning the ideas they suggest into songs. “We want to show them that anyone can do this. Writing a song and recording it—that’s something that everyone can do.”
