Awash in moving acoustic arrangements and stunning harmonies, The Lone Bellow captivated the crowd at the 2013 Non-COMMvention. They sang selections from their self-released self-titled debut and packed what appeared to be the entire attendance of Non-COMM into World Cafe Live’s upstairs stage, raising the room’s collective temperature to a fever pitch. Just Announced: The Lone Bellow opening for Ivan & Alyosha at Johnny Brenda’s on 4/16

We just got word of a big treat for fans of XPN’s February Artist to Watch The Lone Bellow. The Georgia-born, Brooklyn-based close-harmony group was added to the bill of Ivan & Alyosha’s appearance at Johnny Brenda’s on April 16th. The band released its self-tltled record on January 22, and it was met with acclaim from NPR Music, which praised its “songs of survival and redemption, written out of necessity rather than opportunity.” Below, watch a music video for The Lone Bellow’s single “Two Sides of Lonely”; get more information on their Johnny Brenda’s appearance at the WXPN Concert Calendar (powered by The Swollen Fox).

As we look towards bands on the verge of breaking in 2013, The Lone Bellow should be near the top of the list. In anticipation of their debut release on January 22nd, NPR is streaming The Lone Bellow’s self-titled record in-full as a First Listen feature this week. With the delicate ruggedness of The Swell Season and the approachability of The Lumineers, the Georgia-to-Brooklyn transplants brought the Gospel and close harmony traditions of the South up the coast with them. And though their music is steeped in Southern musical lore, there is an element of Northern wilderness in tracks like “Tree to Grow” and “Two Sides of Lonely” that makes the album a cozy and invigorating winter listen.

As NPR writes, “… if The Lone Bellow breaks big, which seems like a decent possibility, it’ll be with songs of survival and redemption, written out of necessity rather than opportunity.” The Lone Bellow will perform at The TLA on February 12th for To Write Love On Her Arms’ Heavy & Light Tour; tickets and information can be found here.
