Folk-stormers The Lumineers made a late night appearance on Jimmy Fallon last night, covering Talking Head’s “This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)” from their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues. The Denver-based outfit make the classic song their own with jangly tamborine accents and their staccato bass drum pounding away. The Lumineers headline the XPoNential Music Festival at Susquehanna Bank Center on Saturday evening, July 27^th; tickets and information can be found here. XPN welcomes the return of Firefly Festival to The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway on June 21st-23rd. The line-up is huge this year, with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and Foster the People headlining the multi-day festival and over sixty of the biggest established and rising acts in the country filling out the bill. Firefly’s diverse bill includes Vampire Weekend, rapper Kendrick Lamar, Public Enemy, Philly’s Dr. Dog, The Walkmen and the Spinto Band, Ellie Goulding, The Avett Brothers, Passion Pit, Calvin Harris, Grizzly Bear, Toro Y Moi, ZZ Ward, Matt and Kim, Dispatch, and new favorites HAIM, Wild Belle and Foxygen. The Lumineers‘ career has skyrocketed in the year since we first met them, so we’re excited to announce that the Denver folk-pop five-piece will headline this year’s XPoNential Music Festival on Saturday, July 27 at the Susquehanna Bank Center with our friends Dr. Dog. Tickets for reserved seats will go on sale this Friday, February 8, at 10 a.m.

The festival takes place from July 26 to July 28 at Wiggins Park, and the full Wiggins Park lineup will be revealed on April 16th. As with last year, three-day pass holders will be admitted to the lawn seat area at the Susquehanna Bank Center show on July 27. Go here for more information about tickets.

The Lumineers and a few thousand fans headline The Tower Theater (photos, review, setlist)

If ever there was a mystery about how The Lumineers became so popular so fast, last night’s appearance at The Tower Theater solved it: they involve the fans in their concerts as much as themselves.

Having catchy songs with singalong refrains helps, sure. But even given those, other acts might make performances a one-directional thing – they play, you watch, and applaud when it seems appropriate. The Lumineers, on the other hand, make the crowd feel involved and at home, all the way to the coat rack and living room piano they deck the stage out with.

“This is a new piano, so we thought we’d break it in,” explained player Stelth Ulvang as the band launched into the barroom jangle of “I Ain’t Nobody’s Problem But My Own” – a cover of a song by their Denver compatriot Sawmill Joe. This wasn’t a tune that folks knew, but its snappy melody had them bopping around all the same. “Flowers in Your Hair,” later on, raised a rousing chorus – it’s the first track on their self-titled 2012 album, so it that familiarity (and its killer melody) was an easy in for the room to join on. The band took this opportunity to push things a step further.

For the first of two performances of their signature song “Ho Hey,” singer Wes Schwartz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites played offstage, among the fans. “We want to do this one without microphones,” Schwartz explained. “So turn off your phones, put away your cameras, just be in the moment with us.”

The sound that ensued was less the acoustic instruments and the band, and more the capacity crowd singing along at the top of their lungs. Which was totally the point – the song was so ingrained in their consciousness they were able to join in, not just through the ho’s and hey’s but along the winding, romanticized verses about traveling on the Chinatown bus to find love in Manhattan.

With only a 40-minute album under their belts, The Lumineers stretched out their set by playing three unreleased songs (one had lyrics to the effect of “All the pretty days,” another made reference to a drama queen) and a couple more covers. Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” was spun anew to put interesting emphasis on its chord changes and instrumental passages (as opposed to the original, which was just words, words and some harmonica), while The Talking Heads’ “Naive Melody” didn’t connect as strongly. Still, these were songs the folks knew, songs they could join in on – and they did.

The Lumineers revisited “Ho Hey” towards the end of their set, rocking a proper full-band rendition of it and then inviting openers Y La Bamba onstage to accompany “Stubborn Love.” The hits were exhausted by the time the encore rolled around, but that was fine. “Big Parade” has a big chorus, and everybody knew the words to that one too.

The Lumineers return to Philly tonight for a sold out show at the Tower Theater. We’re happy to say that XPN’s ride with The Lumineers to their current Grammy Award nominated, Saturday Night Live performing, massive record selling, and shows sold out status began in January, 2012 when World Cafe host David Dye featured this then little know band as one of his weekly World Cafe: Next artists. During the Cafe show, David played “The Dead Sea” and “Morning Song.” The band’s big hit song, “Ho Hey,” now heard almost everywhere, got it’s first play on WXPN by Mike Vasilikos on January 9th during the XPN Monday Night new music show, the 8 O’Clock News. It’s been all uphill since then. What follows is a timeline of our increasing love affair with the band. If you didn’t get tickets to tonight’s show, don’t worry, cause they’ll be back. We promise that. If you do go to the show, have fun.

According to The Lumineers’ web site, they’ve changed dates of several shows including their upcoming show at the Tower Theatre. The new date for their Tower show is Thursday, January 31st, moved from February 9th. Here’s the announcement:

Hey everyone, today we are announcing changes to our 2013 tour schedule. Due to scheduling conflicts our shows in Philadelphia (Upper Darby), Boston and Pittsburgh all have new dates. See below for the new/changed dates. If you have purchased tickets for these shows, don’t worry, they will be honored. If you cannot attend the new date, refunds are available at your point of purchase.

In addition, we’ve added a show in Washington, DC – details and on sale dates are below. Looking forward to seeing you out there and thanks for all of the support.

For The Key’s year-in-review, we asked our trusted sources – our writers and photographers, XPN’s on-air staff, fellow bloggers in the Philly scene and even a few musicians – to send us their Top Five Whatevers. Could be the traditional music route – albums, songs, concerts of the year – or it could be only loosely connected. We’ll be sharing these recaps every day through to the end of the year. Today, XPN Morning Show host Michaela Majoun shares her five most sonically addictive songs of 2012.

By which I mean songs you just can’t get out of your head, not necessarily because of lyrical content or musical depth, but because of a sound that hooks you. I suspect it has something to do with repetition and viscerally-felt clapping or drum noise and the other things noted below. There are studies about why music is addictive – read more here and here.

It’s been almost a year since The Lumineers literally got their first play on WXPN. On Monday, January 9th, 2012, the band was featured as a World Cafe: Next artist and that evening during XPN’s weekly new music show, the 8 O’Clock News, XPN’s Mike Vasilikos played “Ho Hey.” Little did we know then that the song and the band would go on to the well deserved success it’s had this year. The Grammy award nominated Brooklyn-to-Colorado indie-folk rockers have become one of XPN’s most popular break out bands of 2012. When the band played the XPoNential Music Festival last July it’s song “Ho Hey” was just starting to get mainstream radio play but we could feel the excitement from the crowd that watched their set that they were watching a band that would go on to “really big things.” The band released their self-titled debut on April 3rd and since then “Ho Hey” has skyrocketed to the top of the radio charts and sales charts. They’ve been touring almost non-stop since last Winter; in fact they played a SXSW live broadcast last March in Austin for XPN on a bill that included Father John Misty and Delta Spirit. Tonight, the band are in town opening for the Dave Matthews Band; The Lumineers are playing the Tower Theatre on February 9th, 2013. Tickets to the show are sold out. Let’s take a moment to look back on the year long history of XPN’s love affair with The Lumineers. Welcome back to Philly and we raise our glasses to their continued success!

It’s a little bit rainy today, if you haven’t noticed. All but three of tonight’s concert options have been called off due to Hurricane Sandy, and really, it’s a safer and dryer bet to bunker down at home and pretend you’re at a stormy concert. So here’s our favorite one of those in recent memory: Dawes‘ performance in the rain from this summer’s XPoNential Music Festival. You can listen to the set in its entirety here (via the WXPN media player) – the mega-singalong to “When My Time Comes” is magic. And while you’re digging into our festival archives, we suggest getting ready for this Friday’s Free at noon by listening to J.D. Lumineers announce February show at The Tower

Denver trio The Lumineers are returning to Philadelphia at the Tower Theater on February 9th. The roots-pop group, who are currently scheduled to play with Dave Matthews Band at the Wells Fargo Center December 22nd (tickets available here) took off this year with the breakaway hit, “Ho Hey.” Although the group has been together since 2005, their self-titled debut album was released in April. Tennessee roots rockers Old Crow Medicine Show have come full throttle since they began recording in 1998. After the release of their smash hit “Wagon Wheel” in 2004, it was a steady upward slope. Now they have just come out with their most recent album, Carry Me Back; a new step in their raw country rock sound. With four albums under their buckled belts and a slew of sold out performances, these boot stompin’ folksters have made their signature mark on Americana rock music with a slice of bluegrass. They play at the Electric Factory tonight with very special guests, The Lumineers who performed at our XPoNential Festival a couple weeks ago (you can listen to that entire performance here).

R5 Productions summer concert series at Morgan’s Pier continues tonight with a performance from Jukebox the Ghost. This show is totally free but apologies young’uns, you must be 21 to enter. The show kicks off at 6 p.m. Jukebox also played our free at noon in June, you can listen to it here (via the XPN media player). Special guests tonight also include Norwegian Arms, who you can read more about here (and listen to in the player below).

Ian Bavitz, who goes by the moniker Aesop Rock, practices hip hop while jumping the fence to a new wave underground sound. He’s an indie rapper, a hip hop producer, a San Franciscan. And you can catch him tonight at Union Transfer along with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz. Tickets to this all ages show are $15-17; doors open at 8 p.m. Below watch a video for “Zero Dark Thirty” off his latest album Skelethon.

Tonight at the Tin Angel, WXPN welcomes John Francis. He wrote his first album, Strong Wine & Spirits while living in Philadelphia in 2005, and then followed with his sophomore album The Better Angels after relocating to Nashville. Francis takes inspiration from Johnny Cash and other blues rock influences. He performs tonight at 7:30 p.m., this show is 21+ and tickets are $10, grab yours here.
