The Rentiers share nearly all of their recordings on Bring me the Finest World Map Shower Curtain in all the Land

Like many great punk songs, the career of local “pseupergroup” The Rentiers was a quick blitz of energy. From 2014 through 2016 local musician Joel Tannenbaum led a rotating cast of bandmates through the cycles of recording music and playing shows, producing an excellent debut EP in Here Is a List of Things That Exist and a solid string of singles like their later release “The Early 2000s.”

A collection of some of the best punk-rockers on the east coast led by Philly vet Joel Tannenbaum is most definitely something we are keeping our eye on here at The Key. The Rentiers – made up of Mikey Erg on drums (The Ergs!, The Dopamines, etc.), vocalist Anika Pyle of Chumped, and Tyler Pursel of Goddamnit – put out their debut EP Here Is A List Of Things That Exist last March and give us a possible hint of things to come with the single, “The Early 2000’s” released this week via Brooklyn Vegan. The Key Studio Sessions: The Rentiers

I kept getting titles and lyrics wrong when The Rentiers recorded a Key Session with me this month, so much that frontman Joel Tannenbaum felt the need to apologize. “Everything winds up being word games with me,” he said.

On the contrary, his way with words are exactly what make The Rentiers a band to hear. Continue reading →

It seems that in Philadelphia there always seems to be the problem of there being too many shows in one night and having to decide among them. And trust me, it is a very good problem to have. Nonetheless, the second I heard about Brian McGee, The Rentiers, and  North Carolina solo act Jkutchma were playing Ortlieb’s, it was obvious what I was doing that night. Continue reading →

The Rentiers, a project lead by Plow United’s Joel Tannenbaum, will take over Ortlieb’s for the night. The light-hearted folk inspired act can be described as more of a rotating cast of friends, the only consistent members being Tannenbaum himself and percussionist Mikey Erg of The Ergs!. The group will be joined by Brian McGee, who will be accompanied by a full band and North Carolina folk act JKutchma. Watch them perform “Stories of Adam” at Long in The Tooth, and tickets can be purchased here. Continue reading →

The tale is a common one: a couple of teenagers meet in high school, and bored in a suburban working-class town, decide to start a rock band. More than likely, they will play in a few talent shows, maybe record an EP on an older sibling’s gear in their parents’ garage, and eventually dissolve into the ether that is yellowing show fliers and forgotten websites. However, this worn-out story does not hold true to the legend of Plow United. Continue reading →

The Rentiers is a blossoming four-piece of well known talent: Joel Tannenbaum, whose musical resume includes Plow United and Ex Friends (as well as occasional writing for The Key) and Mikey Erg, the punk ruck drummer who has a repertoire of former bands (The Ergs!, The Dopamines, etc.). Joining them on the album are Anika Pyle of Chumped, and Tyler Pursel of Goddamnit and Gym Class Heroes. Continue reading →

The Rentiers share “Stories of Adam” from forthcoming debut

The Rentiers are the latest project from local singer-songwriter Joel Tannenbaum, whose musical resume includes cult favorites Plow United and Ex Friends. (He’s also penned pieces for The Key from time to time.) Shedding the power punk skin and pulling on the ultra-literate, lyrically-focused cap of an indie rock veteran, Tannenbaum’s collection of new songs are stripped- and slowed-down vignettes of people and moments.
