When I learned of Tom Petty‘s passing earlier this week, one of the first people I thought of was my friend George Murphy. Though I first met George through his band Scantron and his association with Low Cut Connie, I quickly found out about his skills as a multimedia master. One of the most recent projects that George and his team at Planet Ten worked on was the production of on-stage visuals for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary tour. Continue reading →

Last night, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers rolled into Philly at the Wells Fargo Center for two hours, performing one hit after another for an audience that sang along to every word. The last time Petty was in town was June 2016, touring with Mudcrutch. That night though was reserved for the songs he recorded from his reunion with his first band. After three long years, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are releasing their new album Hypnotic Eye on July 29th. Though the band played a few festivals last year (including Firefly), they have not released new music. Today, the band released the first track, entitled “American Dream Plan B”. Listen to the song below.

The new album is, as Petty mentioned in an interview with Andy Greene in Rolling Stone, a “straight hard-rockin’ record from beginning to end”. The new track doesn’t disappoint in that regard. In fact, it is reminiscent of Petty’s older albums like 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It.

The band will be playing September 15th at the Wells Fargo Center with Steve Winwood. Get more info here. Below, listen to “American Dream Plan B.”

Journeyman rocker Tom Petty just announced a summer tour with his long running band The Heartbreakers in support of the new Hypnotic Eye, out July 29th on Reprise Records. The album, says David Fricke of Rolling Stone, is “Petty’s decisive return to the concise Sixties-rock classicism and drive of his first great New Wave-era albums, 1976’s Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It.”

The tour brings them to Philadelphia on September 15th to headline Wells Fargo Center with Steve Winwood. Tickets for the show go on sale May 31st at noon. Below, sample some of the new album as a playful Petty offers a taste of the album on vinyl, and watch a couple of songs from the band’s set from last year’s Firefly music festival.
