Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Charly Bliss

Charly Bliss | Photo by John Vettese for WXPN

Joining us in the studio for this Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is the NY “bubblegum punk” quartet Charly Bliss. Formed just a few short years ago by singer Eva Hendricks guitarist Spencer Fox, drummer Sam Hendricks and bassist Dan Shure. Charly Bliss released their debut album, Guppy, earlier this year. Plenty of other bands’ music sits at the crossroads of grunge and glitz, but what sets Charly Bliss apart is the band’s intricate harmonies. You’ll hear them on the three songs they performed live in our studio:

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: She-Devils

She-Devils | Photo by John Vettese for WXPN

Joining us in the studio for our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade live session is the Montreal-based duo She-Devils! Featuring Audrey Ann on vocals and Kyle Jukka on synths and samplers (and a few other unclassifiable gizmos), She-Devils’ self-titled debut was released earlier this year on Secretly Canadian. Rather than re-create the apocalyptic beach party feel of the album, Audrey and Kyle rearranged a few songs to highlight the alluring menace burbling underneath their playful exterior. The result is a session that’s both spacious and claustrophobic, with instruments and vocals being warped to the point where they’re unrecognizable.

Joining us in the studio for this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade session is the New York duo Diet Cig. Formed just a few years ago by guitarist Alex Luciano and drummer Noah Bowman, Diet Cig already find themselves surrounded by an adoring fanbase. It’s easy to understand why once you give a listen to their instantly likable debut album, Swear I’m Good At This, which was released earlier this year on Frenchkiss Records. Just before a show at PhilaMOCA, Diet Cig stopped by our studios to perform some favorites from the album.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Jay Som

For our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session, we were joined in the studio by Melina Duterte, the main brain behind Jay Som. The Oakland-based artist has been making music on her own for a few years, recently releasing her full-length debut on Polyvinyl, Everybody Works. Though all the parts on the album are played by Melina herself, she tours with a full band that features Oliver Pannell on guitar, Dylan Allard on bass and Zachary Elsasser on drums. Taking a short break before a show with The Courtneys, Jay Som dropped by to showcase how the meticulous studio tracks blossom in a live setting.

Tonight’s Indie Rock Hit Parade is even more special than usual, and it’s all thanks to our latest Live Studio Session. Listen in at 11pm ET on WXPN (shortly after the September edition of Making Time RADio with Dave P) for, among other things, a live session with p.s. eliot. The band, formed by twin sisters Katie “Waxahatchee” and Allison “Swearin’/The Fizz” Crutchfield, are currently on a short reunion tour commemorating a new reissue of their entire recorded output, 2007-2011. They stopped by our studios to warm up and play a few of the beloved band’s songs live. There’s a lot of excitement around this session, and you can see why thanks to our friends at NPR Music and Vuhaus, who are hosting a video clip of one of the session’s songs. Check that out HERE.

Also in the mix tonight, a spotlight on the new album from noisy NY/Philly rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars, swirling psych from Montreal’s Elephant Stone and the first-ever solo song from Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon released under her own name. Preview those (and more) below…
