New Zealand brother and sister electronica pop duo Broods are making their Philly debut at Kung Fu Necktie on May 3rd. Consisting of multi-instrumentalist Caleb Nott and younger sister Georgia on vocals, the duo are following in the same musical footsteps as Lorde with their mix of moody and atmospheric keyboard based songs featuring Georgia’s breathy seductive vocals. The band’s debut EP was produced and recorded by Joel Little, who produced and co-wrote Lorde’s Pure Heroine. If the world already has Lorde, why another band that sounds like her? Yes, the six songs here utilise some of the tricks Little perfected with Lorde: sampled vocal hooks, spooky synth templates, twitchy electro blueprints and clattering drum kicks are to the fore. But that’s where the similarities end: Broods have more in common with witch-house acts like Purity Ring or the unsettling soundscapes of Portishead than Lorde’s chart-baiting accessibility.
