This fall, Northern Liberties’ Ruba Club launched a monthly video series to promote not only their stage and studio but also the talented musicians here in Philly. Their latest video features the lovely Alita Moses, a Philly-based jazzy vocalist trained at University of the Arts, doing a cover of Grammy Award winning singer Kimbra’s “Miracle.” If you’ve heard the original version, you know that Kimbra brought a ton of electric energy to her song. What Moses did with her version is pretty interesting: she put a timeless spin on it. Hearing the original version you could tell that the song was made for this generation, but Moses’ version sound like it came from a different generation; it has a disco and soul sound, provided by a large band of backup musicians. Her voice is pretty impressive; it sounds like you’re listening to a young Janelle Monae singing a Donna Summer song. Check out Moses’ “Miracle” cover below, feel the positive energy that she brings to the electrifying song and compare it against the original. While Moses has no upcoming performances, Kimbra will be at World Cafe Live on November 7th; tickets and information can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
