Home Cooking: The sounds of Philly jazz organ legends to be featured on NPR’s Jazz Night In America

On Wednesday, March 4th, the Philadelphia Jazz Project, WXPN, WRTI and NPR Music’s Jazz Night In America teamed up for a celebration of Philadelphia jazz and a tribute to three legendary organists from Philly: Jimmy Scott, Shirley Scott, and Charles Earland. Home Cooking: Celebrating the Philadelphia Jazz Organ Tradition, featured over two dozen Philly musicians recorded live at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for Jazz Night, hosted by Philly jazz musician Christian McBride.

Featured during the performance were some of the best local jazz players: Lucky Thompson, Webb Thomas, Kenny Gates, Dan Kostelnik, Billy Holliman, Monette Sudler, Jeff Knoettner, Sonny Keaton, Tim Warfield, and many others jamming on classics like Jimmy Scott’s “The Sermon,” “The Boogaloo” and “The Funky Blues” by Shirley Scott, and “The Mighty Burner,” and “Leaving This Planet,” by Charles Earland. The music of these three iconic organists tells the story of the evolution of the jazz through the songs of traditionalist Jimmy Scott, Shirley Scott’s soulful, funky, and bluesy take on the genre, and Charles Earland’s more experimental, yet still funky sound.
