XPNFest Recap: Buckwheat Zydeco brought the sounds of the bayou to the River Stage
With a jam-packed crowd filling up the lawn of the River Stage, the legendary Buckwheat Zydeco treated Wiggins Park to thirty minutes of southwest Louisiana fun.
Buckwheat, aka Stanley Dural, joined us for the festival in conjunction with Zydeco Crossroads, XPN’s year-long project that kicked-off last year with a set from zydeco band C.J. Chenier and Red Hot Louisiana.
Playing just three songs, Dural’s band was met with a pit full of enthusiastic dancers (including Forrest Gump). Crowd participation was at an all-time high, which is always a reliable indication of a great set. There were hand-claps, call-and-responses and cheering through-out the midday set.
After two French Creole songs with Dural on the traditional accordion, he sat down at an organ and played his Bob Marley-inspired “Peace, Love Happiness,” a song that lifted spirits and sent good vibes out to everyone.
