The Key Studio Sessions: No Good Sister

They’ve been making the round on the local Americana circuit for the past couple years, and in that time, we’ve seen No Good Sister a few different ways. They can be the core trio of Meaghan Kyle, Jess McDowell and Maren Sharrow, singing country-pop songs and flexing their refined three-part vocal harmonies while strumming acoustic guitars. Sometimes they perform a cappella and traditional. And there’s the full-band raucous rock n’ roll version, with Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner on lap steel, Steven Ciannavei on bass and Hoagy Wing on drums. We got a taste of each in this week’s Key Studio Session, from the fierce and catchy “Sorry About the Mess” (which, per Kyle, “is from the heartbreak files of Jess McDowell”) to the more Nashville-oriented “Little Bit Crazy” (watch a video of that one below) and the divine “Tomorrow Night,” performed sans accompaniment.

The band is sort of a meeting of various players in the Philadelphia folk community – a busy background vocalist, Kyle met McDowell while singing in A Fistful of Sugar; McDowell was doing a side gig from her old band The Wounded Healers. Sharrow, a solo artist, connected with the two to round out the trio, and their self-titled debut was released last winter. In the time since, No Good Sister has worked their way across the various folk stages in the region, including the 54th Philadelphia Folk Fest, and they hit the stage of The Tin Angel this Saturday, September 12th, for a headlining gig.
