There’s nothing like a blend of old school hip-hop and Motown funk to kick off the countdown to Halloween. Maxx Stoyanoff-Williams has been heavily involved in Philly’s hip-hop scene for years, ranging from his work with The Goats in the 90s to his more recent funk-inspired Black Landlord. On Monday, Williams’ newest group, The Opposite Ends, released a brand new song and video for “Josephine,” a quirky little track about an alluring but equally dangerous vampire. The lyrics throughout are clever and hilarious (“when she took me to her room she said it didn’t happen often / the girl had a bed that looked just like a coffin”), but the highlight of the song is Williams’ singing during the funky chorus, which draws heavily from the old-school funk sound of OutKast.

“Josephine” is the debut release on Thermonkulous Records, a new label co-founded by Williams and his Opposite Ends partner Fred Chris Hunter. You can check out the spooky video for “Josephine” below.
