Bruce Springsteen covers David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” on the opening night of The River tour
Last night, Bruce Springsteen kicked off The River tour at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh and opened the show with a few words in remembrance of David Bowie and a rousing cover of “Rebel Rebel” from 1974’s Diamond Dogs.
In his introduction, Bruce remembers meeting Bowie in Philly in 1973:
David, not enough people know it, but he supported our music way way way back in the very very beginning. In 1973 he rang me up and I visited him down in Philly while making the Young Americans record. He covered some of my music – “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City,” “Growin’ Up” – and he was a bug supporter of ours. Particularly when I took the Greyhound Bus down to Philadelphia, that’s how early on it was. We’re thinking of him.
Springsteen’s The River tour comes to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Friday, February 12th for a sold-out show.
