The clock is ticking on the countdown to the next album from The Avett Brothers. Lucky for us, with seemingly each tick of that hypothetical clock has come a new song. This Friday brings us “Satan Pulls The Strings,” the fourth single to be released off the forthcoming True Sadness, out June 24th on Republic Records.

Turn on “Satan Pulls The Strings” without knowing who it is and it might take you awhile to tag it as the work of these folk rock favorites. Loaded with distortion, it takes a bit for the banjo to be introduced. But soon enough the strings of violin and loads of other instruments are pitching in to concoct an intense chorus, validating the song’s name.

The collection of singles from True Sadness surely has not been consistent in tone. First was the foot-stomping anthem “Ain’t No Man,” then the happy pop title track. Since then, we’ve got the epitome of a slow country banjo tune in “Divorce Separation Blues,” and now the devilish “Satan Pulls The Strings.” It’ll be interesting to see what path the remaining eight tracks follow when the full record is released in two weeks.

Craft your opinion on “Satan Pulls The Strings” by listening below. If you dig it, consider checking out The Avett Brothers when they’re in the area for Musikfest in Bethlehem on August 14th. Can’t make it that day? Then get your taste of an Avett Bros. set by reliving their performance at The Mann last month.
