1901 – The first record company, The Victor Talking Machine Company, is incorporated, later merging with the Radio Corporation of America to become RCA-Victor.

1945 – A 10-year-old Elvis Presley makes his first public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi Alabama Dairy Show singing “Old Shep.” He comes in second.

1961 – Jimmie Rodgers, Fred Rose, and Hank Williams become the first artists to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

1968 – The Beatles record the new George Harrison song “Savoy Truffle” at Trident Studios in London. George, Paul, and Ringo record just one take of the basic track (drums, bass, and lead guitar). The song is inspired by Eric Clapton’s love of chocolates, particularly Mackintosh’s Good News.

1970 – The group Lifetime is formed when Jack Bruce (Cream), John McLaughlin (Miles Davis’ group), Larry Young, and Tony Williams join forces.

1977 – The TV event Elvis In Concert, filmed just weeks before The King’s death, is shown on CBS. It shocks many with the depiction of a bloated and drug-addled Elvis Presley in his final days.

1980 – Bruce Springsteen begins his tour for The River in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he’s joined by Bob Seger on a performance of “Thunder Road.”

1988 – Hollywood premieres the acclaimed documentary Imagine: John Lennon.

1988 – Keith Richards releases his first solo album, Talk Is Cheap.

1991 – Texas governor Ann Richards proclaims October 3 as Stevie Ray Vaughan Day (his birthday). An annual motorcycle ride and concert in Central Texas benefits the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund.

1992 – Sinead O’Connor rips up a photograph of Pope John Paul II as she wraps a live performance on Saturday Night Live in protest over sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. NBC is fined $2.5 million dollars by the Federal Communications Commission for the act.

1996 – Van Halen gives David Lee Roth the boot for the second time after they record a couple of songs for the band’s greatest hits package.

2003 – The film of the benefit concert The Concert For George, an all-star tribute to the recently deceased George Harrison, opens in US theaters.

2004 – Seventeen-year-old English soul star Joss Stone becomes the youngest female solo artist to top the British album charts when her sophomore album Mind Body & Soul debuts at #1.
