With an 11/11 release date right around the corner, psychedelic pop rockers Carroll have shared the second single from their upcoming sophomore LP, As Far As Gardens Grow. It’s called “Red Giant”, and it’s every bit as lush as the previously released “Talking To My Own Mirage”. As a child, I thought ear candy was actual candy that you put in your ears, but then I realized people were just talking about music like the kind Carroll makes. If you don’t want to wind up like me, sitting in the emergency room with a half-melted Jolly Rancher in you aural canal, I suggest you stream “Red Giant” below.

At the track’s onset, pristine keyboards and thin, squealing guitars are quickly joined by a sparse, groovy bass line and shuffling drums. Meanwhile, vocalist Brian Hurlow’s serene falsetto floats over it all, singing “The longer I look / The more I get frozen in time”. There’s an undeniable weightlessness to “Red Giant”, especially when additional keyboards are introduced between verses. After a major dynamic shift around the two minute mark, Carroll will the song back to life with quivering tremolo guitar and the refrain of “I’m just gonna’ go look outside / I’ll be right back,” but if this is what it sounds like out there, I wouldn’t expect to see them any time soon.

As Far As Gardens Grow is out Friday, November 11th. That same day, they’ll celebrate the release of the record at The Barbary with support from Thick and Petunia; for more information on the show, visit its Facebook event page.
