After releasing his sophomore effort Himalayalast year, Philadelphia / New York musician Bill Ricchini has been sharing one-off covers under his Summer Fiction project. We heard his take on Morrissey b-side “I Know Very Well How I Got My Name” in the spring, and this week we get a taste of “Solitude” by indie alt-pop duo Girls.

The slow-dance drawl of Girls’ original is still present in Ricchini’s somber cover, though the raspy “Can’t Help Falling In Love” vibe has been traded in for a pristine piano lead with atmospheric organ accents that are almost funereal in the last half. It’s intimate and love-worn, it’s hopeful message of happiness hidden under a veil of heartache.

Listen to Summer Fiction’s cover below, followed by the original. Summer Fiction returns to Philadelphia for a show at Boot & Saddle on December 1st; tickets and information can be found here.
