Witness Weyes Blood’s stunning balladry in new “Used To Be” clip

This past October, Natalie Mering premiered Front Row Seat To Earth, her fourth offering under the Weyes Blood moniker and her third via Mexican Summer. Similar to albums from contemporaries the likes of Foxygen and The Lemon Twigs,  Front Row combines 60s and 70s influences with modern perspective and subject matter, but where those artists tend to air more on the side of whimsy, Weyes Blood specializes in pure, unadulterated serenity. On the brand new video for “Used To Be”, Mering continues that trend.

Continuing the apocalyptic themes she explored on previous single “Generation Why”, Mering sings “I won’t fight fate/It’s now too late” over plaintive organ and piano. It’s soulful and subdued, but around the 1:25 mark, her gorgeous alto takes flight as the track blooms into a triumphant, swaying ballad complete with horns, woodwinds, and harmonized electric guitar. The video itself is a relatively simple one featuring home movie-style footage of Mering wandering the beach and desert, but just like her music, the locales feel as foreign as they do strangely familiar. Weyes Blood is set to play Everybody Hits tonight with support from Shadow Band and Destroying Angel. Tickets are only available at the door, so if you’re hoping for a “front row seat” or any seat for that matter, I suggest you get there early.
