After months of touring and prepping, the debut full-length Tenderfoot from Caroline Reese & the Drifting Fifth is now out in the world. We’ve been digging all of the songs we got to preview, from the pop heavy “Snake Eyes” to the sci-fi tinged “Stormchasers,” so it’s a great treat to hear how they fit together as a whole. Among the newly unveiled tracks is “Beast,” which gets an accompanying video treatment this week as well.

In the clip we see dancer Emily Wohl shift from working at a desk-chained typewriter to dancing in a green field. The imagery mirrors Reese’s inspiration for the song, which she detailed for The Bluegrass Situation:

“I wrote ‘Beast’ while I was on tour, spurred by this truck stop in Louisiana where they keep a live tiger in a cage. Really. It is about the attempt to create a life of meaning and adventure amidst the necessity of routine and responsibility. It’s something I struggle with a lot — the back and forth of being on the road playing music and then coming home and working a day job. Sometimes neither seems like reality.”

With instrumentation by guitarist Mark Watter, bassist Karl Germanovich, and drummer John Macko backing up Reese’s rhythm guitar and vocals, “Beast” takes an upbeat bluegrass-y spin around its classic country roots until the final third. At that point the sounds pull apart for a dark breakdown, illuminating an omnipresent double-edged sword.

Watch “Beast” below and check out Tenderfoot here. Reese plans to announce spring live dates soon.
