Chill Moody’s style of hip-hop is so freaking fun, finding head-bobbing anthems of confidence and reassurance. Furthering that narrative, Mr. Moody just released the lovely six-track record It’s Gon Be A nice Year.

Moody’s bars this time around spit a more personal narrative, and as he puts, an “invite into his process.” Kicking off the record with a stamp of approval, he jumps right into a story of an inspirited artist with a to-do list longer than War & Peace. Confidence builders “Never Fail” and “They Don’t Know” calm things down slightly to inform the world of his life, and comment on the important modern problem of disregarding information and forming an unrepresentative bias (and don’t think we don’t know that opening noise in the latter, you sly man).

My personal favorite “It’s Time To” jazzes things up a bit with a lone Armstrong trumpet, as Nottz’s beat jumps around the time signature. “Home Again” speaks of the rapper’s roots, as he confidently proclaims “I am what I am, like it or love it” on what comes to be the most lyrically impressive track on the record. As we reach the end, “3 Wishes” preaches aspirations in front of a heavenly sample, as if whatever he’s preaching to hears him loud and clear. Overall, It’s Gon Be A nice Year gets better and better with every listen, as Moody continues to cement himself as one of mine (and this city’s) favorites.
