We’re fresh off a Record Store Day Weekend, and that means we’ve got some exclusive tunes to spin on our New Music Show tonight.  In the mix we’ll feature a new song from Philly’s own The War on Drugs, that doubles as our “Gotta Hear Song of the Week”.  And Jason Isbell contributed a live EP to the weekend festivities, we’ll play you something from that too.  Also, tonight we’ll hear more from Australian sensation Tash Sultana and another track from the forthcoming Afghan Whigs album.  Make sure your radio is set to WXPN at 8PM, we’ve got all that and more.

MARK LANEGAN BAND “Beehive”

He is one of the most unique voices in alternative music.  Mark Lanegan is most notable for his work with Screaming Trees in the late 80s and throughout the 90s.  His career has been wonderfully varied as he’s made solo albums and collaborated with many including Queens of the Stone Age, Isobel Campbell, The Gutter Twins (Greg Dulli), and Soulsavers.  The announcement of Gargoyle comes with the song “Beehive” which finds Lanegan in familiar territory.  It’s dark and brooding, but at the same time “Beehive” might be one of Mark’s most accessible moments.  Quite simply, there’s a beauty to it.  Hear for yourself.

SHOUT OUT LOUDS “Oh Oh”

For fans of the Swedish indie-pop band Shout Out Louds, the announcement of a new album felt a little like Christmas day.  It’s been four years since we’ve last heard from them, and their new single “Oh Oh” is a sonic fulfillment of that wait.  Again, for fans, the re-connection will be immediate as “Oh Oh” is sweeping in its arrangement with a juicy hook and generally just a well-crafted song.  The announcement of the single will be followed soon with one of a new full album.  The band kicks off their U.S. tour in Philly October 30th at Underground Arts.

FIRST IMPRESSION: CHASTITY BROWN

Chastity Brown is a songwriter who not only wears her heart on her sleeve, but does so poetically.  The Tennessee born artist now resides in Minnesota and is preparing to release her new album Silhouette of Sirens this May.  The songs on the record are certainly a reflection of life and in this case a life that has seen pain, heartbreak and love.  While many of these songs seem born from troubles, Chastity sings with beauty and perseverance making for a highly emotional album that surely connects.  We’ll cherry-pick a couple songs to play tonight, enjoy a performance and interview with Chastity below.
