1970 – Diana Ross releases her self-titled, solo debut album.

1971 – Carole King’s album Tapestry hits #1 in the US, where it stays for 15 weeks.

1973 – Smokey Robinson releases his solo debut album, Smokey.

1973Roberta Flack … The First Time Ever TV special airs on ABC.

1974 – The Delinquents, a band featuring Mick Jones (later of The Clash), make their debut at Queen Elizabeth College in Kensington, England.

1976 – Future Smiths singer Steve Morrissey has a letter published in this week’s edition of music magazine Record Mirror and Disc asking the editor why they had not included any stories on The Sex Pistols.

1980 – Donna Summer is the first artist to sign with Geffen Records.

2012 – Fiona Apple releases The Idler Wheel … (full title: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do.)
