On Friday night, after an immense storm descended upon Philadelphia, a tour for the ages opened up on Spring Garden street.

Waxahatchee sent their fourth album, Out In The Storm, out into the world, and, both live and on the record, itʼs very simply Katie Crutchfield at her best. Earlier in the day, she played a short set at XPN’s Free at Noon concert, and both performances were raw, and emotive, pulling us deep into her own experiences and machinations, ones that many of us can relate amply to.

Songs like “Recite Remorse,” the live setʼs opener, and “Sparks Fly,” a deeper cut on the record, beg to be sang angrily in the car with the windows down, and before too long, theyʼll be sung back at Crutchfield at live shows too.

It wasnʼt simply a highlight of the new stuff on Friday, however; songs like “Poison” resurfaced throughout the set, giving the crowd ample material to rock out to as they made their way into the weekend. With much of the XPN crowd having seen two similar sets from Waxahatchee in under 12 hours, we can say with confidence to the rest of cities on this coming tour that this is not a show to miss.

Joining Waxahatchee was Baltimore three-piece Snail Mail, who combine astute and introspective lyrics by frontwoman Lindsey Jordan with smart instrumentation reminiscent of A Great Big Pile Of Leaves, among others.

Rounding out the bill was Philly three-piece Cayetana, to whom the XPN Staff gave coveted Album Of The Year honors for their 2014 release Nervous Like Me. If youʼre a Philly music lover, and a devout reader of The Key (thanks!), you know how big it is to have a touring bill will this band on it.
