PREMIERE: Roger Harvey’s new track “Two Coyotes” is a yearning, intimate letter on the pains of separation

Since Roger Harvey traversed from Pittsburgh to Philly a few years back, he’s been known in the scene for his punk tunes — touring with the likes of The Menzingers, Cayetana, and Against Me!. But today, he’s shaking that notion up with the release of a new track titled “Two Coyotes.” Sans searing guitar and driven, poppy hooks, the new track is an intimate folk-rock breed that blends together the best of the two genres, and highlights Harvey’s intricate storytelling abilities.

Though technically quieter in sound from past work, “Two Coyotes” is still just as loud in meaning and emotion. With Harvey’s steady and soothing voice singing “It’s hard to feel grateful to be sharing the stars / as I love you through pictures and telephone wires,” the song sounds like a personal, yearning letter between a separated love manifest into music; one with a message sent in private warmth and affection, but simultaneously crossing expansive distances through a sonic desert-rock atmosphere of twangy, soaring guitars and a piercing, wistful violin.

In particular the song describes the kind of heartbreak experienced by being torn from a loved one because of political borders. Harvey expands on this:

“’Two Coyotes’ at its core is a song about separation. In specifically, the heartbreaking reality of the Mexico-United States Border. Often overlooked is how the many with less are at the constant mercy of the few with more. This song is a love song and reaction to that, like many that came before it.”
