Aug 29 in Music History: Iggy Pop releases Lust for Life, Oasis releases their debut album

1958 – The first of Alan Freed’s Big Beat revues is held at Brooklyn, New York’s Fox Theatre. Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and his Comets, Frankie Avalon, The Elegants, Bobby Freeman, and Jimmy Clanton are all on the bill.

1958 – George Harrison joins the band Quarrymen, of which John Lennon and Paul McCartney are already members.

1966 – At Candlestick Park in San Francisco, The Beatles play their last concert before a paying audience to a sold out crowd of 25,000. John and Paul bring cameras on stage and take pictures between songs. They finish the show with a version of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally.”

1966 – The Youngbloods record “Get Together.”

1969 – Stevie Wonder releases My Cherie Amour.

1976 – The Clash, Buzzcocks, and the Sex Pistols all appear at a showcase event organized by Malcolm Maclaren at The Screen On The Green in Islington, London. It is only The Clash’s third gig and the first ever to be recorded.

1976 – Neil Young joins Firefall on stage at a concert in Santa Monica, CA as they open for Spirit. When the headliners take the stage, Spirit’s bass player asks Young to join them, but when he does, Spirit’s frontman Randy California pushes him off the stage to the horror of his bandmates, who stop playing and leave.

1977 – Iggy Pop releases Lust for Life.

1980 – UB40 release their debut album, Signing Off. It is the first ever reggae record to reach the Top 25 in the UK.

1986 – The studio in Philadelphia where American Bandstand was shot is entered into the US National Register of Historic Places.

1987 – Warren Zevon releases Sentimental Hygiene.

1991 – WFNX DJ Kurt St. Thomas gives Nirvana’s album Nevermind its world premiere by playing the album from start to finish on the station in Boston, Massachusetts.

1994 – During the Meat Puppets’ set opening for Stone Temple Pilots at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, radio DJ Howard Stern joins them on stage to jam on “Lake of Fire.”

1994 – Oasis release their debut album, Definitely Maybe, which goes on to become the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK (spending 177 weeks on the charts there) and sells over eight million copies worldwide.
