I wonder how many guitar strings Chris Forsyth goes through in a year — or a month, or even a day. Because in just the forty-five minute span of today’s Free at Noon performance — or should I say, jam-fest — we lost more than a couple of brave string souls in the name of sweet, sweet music.

After the always-lovely Helen Leicht welcomed the Philly guitarist and his crew, The Solar Motel Band, on stage, hers would be the last voice the crowd would hear for the coming ten minutes. Instead, guitar gladly took its place.

Because, really, there’s no need for words when you can shred instead. This seemed to be Forsyth’s mentality as he plunged his way into the set with expansive and psychedelic songs from his latest album, Dreaming in the Non-Dream

Alternating between chugging-along in steady fashion, to spurting off in hyperdrives of cacophony, with tastes of palm mute riffs and wild guitar solos seasoned throughout, Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band took the crowd on a massive sonic journey.

As the three stood in triangle formation, you could almost see the music bounce and vibe off one another as they grooved totally in sync through the peaks and valleys of songs such as the bluesier, melancholy-tinged, “History and Science Fiction,” and “Have We Mistaken the Bottle for the Whiskey Inside?”– which served as the sole vocal-featured track.

If you missed today’s show, worry not, you’ll have a couple more chances to see the trio in Philly, including a Kung Fu Necktie gig later this month on September 24th, and a stop at Union Transfer supporting atmospheric rock outfit, Luna, onNovember 16th. You can find info on both over at the XPN Concert Calendar, along with photos from today’s performance below.
